Job Summary
The Meter Reader position is responsible for meter reading, installation, testing, repair and maintenance. The position also terminates and restores water service, and overtime is required as needed.
Essential Job Functions
Drives city-provided vehicle to commercial and residential water customer locations throughout the City, and walks to water meters operating hand-held meter reading device to record water consumption.
Terminates and restores water service and verifies meter readings as needed upon the direction of the Lead Meter Reader and the Utility Billing Manager.
Reads residential and commercial zones within appropriate effectiveness and efficiency measures.
Installs replacement meters, completes meter testing, calibrates, and repairs equipment as necessary. On the job training is provided if needed.
Prepares and maintains accurate, legible data and records.
Assists with special projects, as assigned.
With teamwork as the focus, the position requires timely arrival and start of work during assigned schedule.
Maintains city-provided vehicle and equipment for cleanliness and organization.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Ability to read and record numbers accurately with attention to detail.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn and follow safety procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively with City staff and citizens.
Skilled in customer service delivery, particularly escalated customer service interactions.
Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally in person and by two-way radio.
Ability to operate required equipment, including motor vehicle, hand-held meter reading device, and two-way radio.
Ability to perform continuous physical activity, including pushing, pulling, lifting (ex: covers of meters), moving, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, standing, and walking (approximately 7.5 miles/day) for extended periods of time under adverse conditions, including elevated heat, cold, and moisture, in order to complete job assignments.
Minimum Education, Certification, And Experience Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent and one year of related experience is preferred for this position. It is required to have a valid State of Texas Driver's License with good driving record.
