We are seeking a detail-oriented individual responsible for accurately assigning Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes based on medical record documentation (paper or electronic) for outpatient encounters. In addition to coding responsibilities, this role involves training and educating MTF staff on coding issues and actively participating in coding compliance activities.
Education/Certification
Candidates must hold recognized certifications from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) such as Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or CCS-P (Certified Coder Specialist - Physician) with relevant experience.
Experience
Minimum three years of recent experience in outpatient settings (physician's office or ambulatory surgery centers) within the last five years.
Experience must include proficient assignment of E&M, CPT, and HCPCS codes across various specialties (e.g., Family Practice, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, OB/GYN).
Experience exclusively in ancillary specialties (PT/OT, Radiology, Lab, Nutrition) that do not utilize E&M codes will not qualify.
Coding experience limited to specific payer requirements for business office functions (e.g., insurance billing, accounts receivable) does not qualify.
Two years of outpatient/ambulatory surgery experience in a military medical facility may qualify.
