Summary
The Managing Director of Tax is a high-level executive role responsible for overseeing all facets of the organization’s tax strategies, tax compliance, and reporting. This position will oversee the tax department and work with Managing Directors and other various management teams to provide strategic tax planning and consulting. This role will also work closely with other Ground Control offices and will be responsible for leading the successful integration of all existing tax departments into one centralized tax division.
The Managing Director of Tax will further be responsible for the ongoing mentorship and assessment of all Ground Control tax managers and their staff, making sure to develop and train as needed. This role will be instrumental in managing the overall workflow, progress, and status of upcoming deadlines, and will communicate with various departments as necessary.
Qualified candidates will possess exceptionally strong leadership and interpersonal skills, technical and business acumen, and a deep understanding of complex tax laws and regulations to effectively manage the tax division.
This is a full-time position based out of Los Angeles, CA.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Work closely with the leadership department on annual budgeting process to ensure accurate and achievable budgets
Collaborate with Managing Directors to resolve complex tax matters for clients
Create and execute tax planning strategies to decrease tax costs, mitigate tax risks, and reduce audit deficiencies
Ability to assess technical acumen of tax staff and mentor and develop as needed
Oversee client billing and implement budgets and cost controls as necessary to ensure alignment to firmwide budgets and to maximize profitability
Review and analyze staff billing data and address discrepancies as needed directly with staff
Regularly assess department staffing needs and work with Operations to recruit as needed
Ability to conduct high level review of complex multi-state tax returns for high-net-worth individuals, (individual, S corps, C corps, partnerships, and estate returns)
Ability to conduct high level analysis of tax implications for individual/business tax returns
Maintain knowledge of state and federal laws and ensure compliance regarding tax, tax software & technology, and accounting standards
Take lead in addressing various tax related matters and propose and implement resolutions to any challenges
Address inquiries from the IRS and other tax authorities and propose recommendations to the client for consideration
Manage workflow during critical tax deadlines and year-end closeout process
Create and execute tax planning strategies to increase business revenue
Special projects as assigned by Executive leadership
Requirements
10-15 years of experience in accounting and taxation for high net-worth individuals
Minimum 10 years of managerial experience
In depth knowledge of tax concepts and regulations related to individuals, C corps, S corps, partnerships, trusts, and foreign tax compliance
5 or more years of direct experience overseeing a Tax Department (or similar)
Proven track record of success in related field/role
Excellent written and communication skills
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Excellent leadership skills
Ability to thrive in a team environment
Experience in Business Management – preferred
Experience in Agilink & Zenith – preferred
Proficiency with CCH, Axcess, XCM, BNA – preferred
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting (or related business field)
Active CPA license
Master’s Degree in Taxation - preferred

The base salary range for this position is $225,000 – $312,000. The base salary offered will be determined by factors including, but not limited to, experience, credentials, education, certifications, skill level required for the position, the scope of the position, and geographic location. Actual base salary offered will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
