The Position
The Library Services Department is responsible for providing professional library services to meet the educational, cultural, and information needs of the residents of San Leandro. Library Clerks perform a variety of customer service and clerical tasks in connection with checking out or checking in library materials, issuing library cards, shelving of books and filing of library materials at Library locations.
The Library Clerk position is a part-time role working between 16 to 18 hours per week, as well as an assigned Saturday or Sunday shift. Schedules are created to fulfill the operational needs of the Library.
Library and consist of shifts in the morning, afternoon, evenings, and weekends. The Library is actively looking to fill a specific schedule which requires the candidate to have a flexible schedule. These part-time position(s) may not exceed a maximum of 999 hours per City fiscal year (July - June).
Supervision Exercised and Received: Receives general supervision from assigned management and/or supervisory staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: The essential functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.
Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED).
Experience: One year of clerical experience, including some use of computers or computerized systems; experience interacting with the general public and providing customer service.
Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements: Must be willing to work such hours as are necessary to accomplish the job requirements; travel to various branch locations. Classification requires the possession and continued maintenance of a valid class "C" California driver's license.

Library Clerk shifts are assigned based on the library's operational needs. Are you willing to commit to the specific scheduling needs of the San Leandro Library?
This position requires the ability to stand for long periods of time as well as frequent walking and bending. Are you able and willing to perform these tasks?

- Explains library circulation policies to the public;
- Sorts books, publications, and other items according to established procedures and returns them to shelves, files or other designated storage and display areas;
- Prepares new materials for display;
- Collects fees for lost or damaged materials, payment for merchandise, and maintaining required records; accepts applications for and issues library cards;
- Answers routine inquiries and refers patrons in need of further assistance to senior staff;
- Identifies and documents missing or otherwise problematic items; and
- Performs clerical activities such as filing, typing, data entry, photocopying and mail processing.
