  • Performs professional librarian duties requiring the use of sound judgment and initiative in developing solutions to problems, interpreting general policies and determining work methods in meeting public needs for library materials and services.
  • Work involves continuous public contact, requiring the exercise of considerable patience, tact and diplomacy.
  • Develops programs, primarily for youth, engages in outreach activities and provides customer service including circulation and accounts, reader's advisory and research assistance.
  • Engages with a diverse clientele to provide assistance, resolve conflicts and foster a welcoming environment.
  • Serves on various library committees, participates in professional development and promotes the library to the community.
  • May be required to work at various locations in the library system.
  • Regular schedule 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, 1 evening per week 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, and occasional Saturdays.

Essential Functions

Maintains an advanced knowledge of library resources and practices and an awareness of current trends and technologies through regular review of professional literature and participation in continuing education and professional development opportunities such as seminars and workshops. Serves on professional teams and work groups to advance librarianship efforts at the Boise Public Library.

Interprets and communicates library policies and procedures to library users and staff at an expert level. Works to maximize usability and continuously improve the library user experience.

Handles complex issues and problems, and refers most complex issues to higher-level staff.

Provides leadership, coaching and mentoring to lower-level staff. May act as first-level supervisor in absence of supervisor/manager.

Performs all duties of lower-level librarian positions. Performs more complex, skilled tasks, and assists others as required.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • Master's degree in library and information science and
  • 4 years of experience working in a public library setting developing and implementing library programs and
  • providing reference and reader's advisory service, or
  • an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • Master's degree in library and information science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited university and
  • 6 years of experience in a public setting library development and implementing library programs.

Requires Knowledge Of

  • public library approaches, policies and procedures;
  • theory and practice of reference services;
  • intellectual freedom and open access;
  • quality customer service techniques;
  • print, electronic and web-based library resources; and
  • proficiency with office software and ILS systems.

Requires Ability To

  • demonstrate leadership to staff;
  • work effectively with diverse personalities and populations, using tact, good reasoning and sound judgment;
  • analyze and resolve customer issues;
  • communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and
  • perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Physical Efforts

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment

The work environment will include inside conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria and chemicals.

This position works: weekends and evenings, as needed.
