Department Summary
The Sycamore Library Branch (part of the Branch Library Department) of the University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries is seeking to hire a Government Information Librarian (GIL) to lead the Government Information Unit, work collaboratively with department, division, and other library personnel to act as the coordinator for the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) for the UNT Libraries and advance the strategic directions of the library and university. The Government Information Unit at Sycamore Library serves the students, faculty, and staff of UNT as well as the citizens of the 13th Congressional District of Texas and beyond.
UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.
Position Overview
The GIL provides leadership of the Government Information Unit (GIL) within the Branch Libraries department in the Public Services Division. The GIL acts as the coordinator and contact person for the FDLP and contact for the Texas State Publications program. The librarian performs liaison duties, including outreach, information literacy instruction, research assistance, and the creation and maintenance of subject guides, related to the government documents collections and for assigned subject librarian departments of Criminal Justice, Emergency Management and Disaster Science, Public Administration, and Political Science. The GIL works with personnel in the Collection Management division, to perform collection development related to government information and assigned subject areas. The librarian also collaborates with Digital Libraries division personnel to plan government information digitization projects. The librarian exercises broad independent judgement and authority under the general direction of the Branch Library Head.

Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
- Leads the government information unit in the Branch Library department.
- Supervises 2 staff members, the Government Information Cataloger and the Lead Government Information Reference Specialist.
- Mentors and assists other Branch Library department members.
- Trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of direct reports.
- Addresses personnel issues in a timely manner.
- Participates in department operational planning in support of the Libraries Strategic Directions.
- Contributes to the development, maintenance, and revision of policies and procedures for the operation of the department.
- Serves as the primary contact to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) as administered by the Government Publishing Office, and performs all duties required by the FDLP.
- Works to maintain partnerships with federal and state agencies, including the Government Publishing Office, National Archives and Records Administration, Texas Secretary of State's Office, and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
- Develops the federal and state documents collections (physical and electronic), including digital projects like the Texas Register, CyberCemetery, Congressional Research Service Reports Collection, as well as the Libraries’ Legal Collection and General Map Collection.
- Serves as a representative of the Technical Report Archive and Image Library (TRAIL).
- Oversees the cataloging and related technical services activities in the unit, which includes guiding workflow procedures, establishing project priorities, managing the government documents cataloger, and serving as the point of contact for records vendor, Marcive.
- Works collaboratively with the Branch Library Head to oversee the outreach and reference activities of the Government Information Unit, which includes setting priorities and establishing workflows for reference and outreach activities.
- Collaborates with Associate Dean for Digital Libraries and members of the Digital Projects team to scope and plan projects that provide permanent public access to government information.
- Works with the Associate Dean for Public Services and the Associate Dean for Digital Libraries to secure lines of funding for projects involving government information.
- Oversees metadata creation for government document collections housed in the UNT Digital Library and Portal to Texas History.
- Fosters collaborative relationships with peer institutions to provide public access to government information and market federal depository services.
- Promotes and provides training on government information internally to library colleagues.
- Actively promotes Library collections and services to the University and outside organizations and community groups through participating in university and community initiatives and events.
- Serves as the Subject Librarian to the Departments of Criminal Justice, Emergency Management and Disaster Science, Public Administration, and Political Science.
- Participates in collection development and provides outreach, reference assistance, and instruction to students and faculty in assigned departments.
- Participates in Branch Library department outreach and projects.
- Stays current with developments in relevant library and information science fields.
- Fosters positive relations with faculty, students, and staff.
- Works to meet the requirements for service to the libraries, university, and the profession.
- Works to meet the requirements for scholarly, creative, and professional activities.
- Maintains collegial and collaborative working relationships with colleagues in other library departments and divisions.
Minimum Qualifications
- American Library Association accredited master's degree, or equivalent.
- Familiarity with the role the Federal Depository Library Program plays in community access to information.
- Two years experience in public services in a library.
- Ability to build effective work relationships.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Two years experience working with government documents collections.
- Two years of experience working in an academic library.
- Social Science undergraduate or graduate degree.
