INTERNSHIP- Employment Services- Refugee program

Position Summary: The Refugee Services Intern will work alongside the Career Development Specialist (CDS) to contribute to the effort of aiding refugees, asylees, and immigrants in finding gainful employment and achieving self-sufficiency. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in supporting clients enrolled in specialized refugee employment programs. The intern will assist in various tasks aimed at helping clients establish and attain their career development goals, while also supporting administrative functions crucial for program success.

Essential Internship Functions

  • Career Planning - Case Management:
  • Collaborate with clients under the guidance of the Career Development Specialist to develop and implement their service plans and career development strategies.
  • Assist in coordinating with clients, Refugee Services Employment Outreach Specialist, and primary Case Managers to identify suitable job opportunities tailored to individual client needs.
  • Support clients in navigating the job application and interview processes, fostering their independence in these tasks.
  • Learn to train clients on various aspects of U.S. work culture essential for job retention and career advancement, including both hard and soft skills.
  • Assist in facilitating CIRI's Job Club and other relevant training sessions for program participants, covering topics such as job readiness, computer literacy, financial management, and more.
  • Participate in identifying scholarship and tuition reimbursement opportunities to further clients' career aspirations.
  • Contribute to efforts aimed at empowering individuals to complete English Language Learning (ELL) programs by researching and developing solutions to barriers hindering ELL progress.
  • Support the Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting volunteers for English tutoring sessions.
  • Administrative Management:
  • Learn to maintain accurate and timely client data, including case notes, using CIRI's online data collection systems and paper case files.
  • Develop an understanding of key grant programmatic requirements and assist in preparing statistical information for various reports necessary for grant compliance and program evaluation.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., Social Work, International Relations, Education, etc.).
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team and with individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Sensitivity to the needs and challenges faced by refugees, asylees, and immigrants.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Prior experience in case management, career counseling, or working with refugee populations (preferred but not required).

Duration and Schedule: This is an unpaid internship position requiring a commitment of 10-15 hours per week for a duration of 4 months or one semester. The schedule is flexible and can be tailored to accommodate the intern's academic requirements.
