Historic Archaeologist/Historian

AZTEC is currently seeking a qualified Historic Archaeologist/Historian to join our Phoenix, Arizona Cultural Resources Group.

Job Description

The purpose of this role is to develop, direct, and complete projects involving historic archaeology and/or historic assessment. Projects may be located in the Southwest, California, and/or Great Basin regions. Below is a list of duties for this position.

Primary Job Duties

  • Perform archival research and/or conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories.
  • Develop, direct, and participate in Class III survey involving historic resources and/or NRHP assessment and/or documentation of historic resources.
  • Perform construction monitoring.
  • Complete HABS/HAER documentation.
  • Develop historic contexts.
  • Prepare, review, and/or edit technical reports documenting and synthesizing the results of research as well as field and lab work.
  • Consider, document, and make recommendations regarding findings of project effect and appropriate means of avoidance, minimization, and/or mitigation.
  • Coordinate preparation of report figures with GIS staff.
  • Analyze historic artifacts.
  • Draft Section 106 letters for client use.
  • Develop and adhere to project scopes and budgets.
  • Assist with marketing and business development.
  • Understand and assist clients with state, federal, and tribal cultural resources compliance.
  • Work independently and resolve project challenges with minimal supervision.
  • Communicate effectively and work closely with fellow employees, clients, vendors, and the public.
  • Perform travel that may include overnight and/or out-of-state stays for extended periods of time.

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, And Skills)

  • Minimum of MA or MS in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field (Ph.D. preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and a minimum of 5 years of experience supervising and managing projects and preparing technical reports.
  • Thorough understanding of Southwest, California, and/or Great Basin prehistory and history and applicable federal and state cultural resource management/historic preservation laws.
  • Experience preparing research designs, work plans, and technical reports that meet state and federal standards and guidelines.
  • Experience participating in all types and phases of CRM investigation.
  • Successful management and completion of projects on time and within budget.
  • Experience using GPS and GIS applications (Tablet, ArcGIS Pro).
  • Experience in and ability to generate, organize, and maintain accurate field records that meet state and federal standards and guidelines.
  • Ability to perform fieldwork in adverse conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, arid environments, dense vegetation) and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid Driver's License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier.

Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
