Position Description

LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST

The Library Media Generalist provides all staff and students with an enriched environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual growth and to aid all students and staff in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media resources. The library media generalist reports directly to the building principal.

Performance Responsibilities

Operates and supervises the school media center.

  • Evaluates, selects, and acquires media materials and equipment.
  • Assumes responsibility for the inventory and maintenance of the Library Media Center.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media materials, and instructs teachers and student on the use of the system.
  • Conducts continuous in-house evaluations of the materials and equipment in order that purchase requests may be made on a selective basis.
  • Exercises general supervision over scheduling of materials and equipment for classroom use.
  • Orders and schedules use of borrowed materials.
  • Prepares the initial media center budget. Updates the budget after review by the administrator.
  • Maintains a schedule for repairing and replacing worn materials.
  • Presents and discusses materials with a class group as part of the systematic skills instruction program in support of classroom curriculums.
  • Assists teachers in the selection of instructional materials and makes media materials available to support the instructional program.
  • Serves as a consultant to the members of the multimedia education community in order that they be instructed on the proper use, mechanical operation, and maintenance of equipment, as well as to help them develop and use audio-visual materials of their own creation.
  • Participates in district, school, departmental, and grade level curriculum design and assessment projects; translates curriculum needs into the library media program goals and objectives.
  • Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials.
  • Consults with teachers in planning assignments that lead to extended use of media resources.
  • Arranges for interlibrary loans as needed.
  • Supervises media aides in the performance of their duties.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or designee

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Candidate must possess a valid certificate as a Library Media Generalist in the State of New Hampshire. A Master’s degree in library service, instructional media, or equivalent is preferred. Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the local school board policy on the evaluation of professional personnel. The term of the contract shall be in accordance with current bargaining unit agreement.
