Job Description
The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) is looking to hire a Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager. As the Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager, you will be a strategic leader responsible for developing NHMA’s policy footprint by focusing on access, prevention, research, and health professional education policy and advocacy. This role requires a focus on the Federal and State government levels, monitoring legislative and regulatory activities, advocating for the organization’s interests, and building relationships with government officials, agencies, and stakeholders. The position requires a deep understanding of the political landscape, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various internal and external partners.
Responsibilities:
Policy:
● Maintain priority legislation files
● Lead preparation of periodic reports on policy initiatives, laws, bills, and reports related to Hispanic Health
● Identify, monitor, and analyze policies affecting the Hispanic Community and Medical Professionals at the Federal and State levels
Government Affairs:
● Provide support as required by NHMA and assist in day-to-day government affairs
● Assist in planning and preparation of Congressional briefings and government affairs meetings with a focus on Hispanic health access, prevention, research, and the health workforce
● Record and transcribe minutes for meetings as needed
● Provide research as requested
● Develop and maintain strong and lasting relationships with Federal and State elected officials and their staff
● Attend meetings with Federal and State legislators and other policymakers
NHMA Advocacy:
● Lead all NHMA policy advocacy efforts
● Work cross-functionally with programs and communications teams as well as partners/coalitions to educate policymakers on NHMA's goals
● Lead NHMA’s engagement with governments and relevant third parties in the planning, formation, and execution of public policy initiatives that benefit the Hispanic Community
● Support the development of NHMA’s narrative and position around key issues, including health access, prevention, research and medical policies briefs, consultation responses, and government meetings.
Requirements:
● 3-5 years of relevant work experience in public policy or government including experience managing policy campaigns and strategic outreach with diverse stakeholders
● Deep understanding/knowledge of the policy arena and Federal healthcare policy and inner workings of Federal and State governments
● Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, law, or other related fields
● Experience advising teams and executives on policy matters
● Experience producing policy briefs and other policy and advocacy procedural documents
● Travel may be required for meetings, conferences, and other events
