Education
The Genetics Counselor works under the direction of the Director of Oncology Nursing and provides oncology genetic counseling to patients and families by obtaining genetic histories, assessing pertinent risk factors, and developing family trees, counsels’ patients and families regarding cancer risk and predisposition.

Education
- Certified Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC)-renewed every five years, or Active Candidate Status
- Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling
- Relevant education, certifications and/or work experience a plus
The Genetics Counselor works under the direction of the Director of Oncology Nursing and provides oncology genetic counseling to patients and families by obtaining genetic histories, assessing pertinent risk factors, and developing family trees, counsels’ patients and families regarding cancer risk and predisposition.
Responsibilities Include But Not Limited To
- Coordinating specimen collection and transfer to appropriate laboratory, monitors and reports test results to provider and patient. Participates in multidisciplinary clinic, tumor conference, and community education.
- Provides follow-up counseling and resources to patients when needed including referral to community support groups and referral to pertinent research registries.
- Informs providers and patients of interpretation of test results, risk management, and surveillance guidelines.
- Coordinates other genetic services as needed.
- Performs other duties assigned.
