Executive Editor, Random House Studio (Open to Remote)

Random House Studio, an imprint of Random House Children's Books is excited to hire an Executive Editor to join our editorial team. Our imprint’s focus is on picture books, though we publish books for older readers, too. Some of our acclaimed and bestselling authors are Suzanne and Max Lang, Joy Harjo, Matthew Cordell, Michaela Goade, Vera Ahiyya, Nicholas Day, Brigette Barrager, Bess Kalb, Erin Kraan, Lane Smith, Vera Hiranadani, Guojing, and Pete Oswald.

The Executive Editor will report to the VP and Publisher. We are looking for a highly regarded Executive Editor who has acquired and edited high profile and strong selling books for children with a focus on picture books. We are specifically looking for someone with close relationships with agents and creators who has experience with bestselling books especially with character driven picture books. In this role, the Executive Editor will acquire, shape, position, and successfully publish approximately 10 -12 titles per year. The position involves communicating closely with authors, illustrators, and agents, and working closely with a talented and collaborative Art Director and Designer.

The Role:

  • Actively solicit, acquire, and evaluate picture books with critical and bestselling potential.
  • Manage the lifecycle of the editorial process from acquisition to publication: collaborate with designers, art directors, and production teams, as well as with sales, publicity, and marketing teams, to publish and position books as efficiently and effectively as possible.
  • Mentor junior staff, as opportunities arise.
  • Overall, be a powerful and proactive advocate for your titles, your colleagues’ lists, and the Random House Studio imprint as a whole.


The Essentials:

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant editorial experience in book publishing
  • A track record of acquiring and publishing profitable and critically acclaimed children’s books
  • An expansive and deep network of agent, author, and illustrator contacts
  • Experience taking multiple concurrent projects from conception to completion
  • A strong record of meeting deadlines with effective organization and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to be supportive of other team members
  • Diplomacy and sensitivity in handling delicate conversations with multiple parties

The salary range for this position is $90,000-$140,000. All positio ns are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
