HJF is seeking an Epidemiologist III to provide epidemiological, computer programming, biostatistical and laboratory procedure support for a specified project. This is the third of five epidemiologist levels.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This position will be in support of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The epidemiologist in this position will primarily work on studies of the Environmental Determinants of Cancer among members of the US Military. These studies involve the assessment of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and other exposures from pre-diagnostic serum samples. The serum biomarkers will be analyzed in conjunction with measures of genomic, proteomic and possibly metabolomic profiles to assess susceptibility and risk of development of various cancers. This position would provide great experience and opportunities for a junior doctoral level epidemiologist who has some prior experience in analyses of “omics” and exposure mixtures.

Responsibilities

  • Provides input regarding study design, necessary statistical analysis and epidemiological interpretations of the research.
  • Preparing written reports, manuscripts, and presentations for talks and posters.
  • Initiates, designs, and implements epidemiological analyses supporting the research project.
  • Works with PI and study coordinator to maintain and update regulatory documentation.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include participation in required training.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree required. Doctoral Degree in Epidemiology preferred.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of experience is required. (Related graduate educational training can be substituted for years of experience)
  • Past experience with analyses of molecular, genetic (-omics) data preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge and ability to use and teach complex epidemiologic research methods for assessing the risk of disease in humans due to potential risk factors.
  • Advanced knowledge in computer programming with experience with advanced multivariate statistical methods. A successful candidate will have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of statistical software including SAS, STATA and R.
  • Previous experience with “-omics data” desired.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 public Trust.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct Supervisor:
    • Works with and supervises master’s and doctoral students working on the research study.
    • Supervises work of junior epidemiology staff.
Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
