Position Description Summary

The Jacob Burns Law Library at the George Washington University Law School is accepting applications for the position of Electronic Services Librarian to begin as early as July 29, 2024. As a member of the library’s Innovative Technology Services team, the librarian in this position oversees the development and delivery of services supporting the curation and use of the library’s growing electronic resource collection, including negotiation, license review, purchase decisions, access in the library discovery ecosystem, and analyzing usage statistics and budgetary parameters to evaluate electronic resources.

Established in 1865, the George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in the nation’s capital. The Law School is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. GW Law is an urban campus located in downtown DC’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood, near to a vibrant mix of museums, restaurants, government and international organizations, the White House, and more. The Law Library supports the curricular and teaching requirements of the Law School, the research and publication needs of the law faculty, and the study and research needs of the law students; and provides to the scholarly community at large access to a research collection of material about the law and its history. Please note that initially the librarian in this position will be required to work at the university’s Foggy Bottom campus in Washington, DC; the ability to work a hybrid schedule including a combination of on-campus and remote work in the future will be assessed and determined by the supervisor in accordance with Law School and University policies.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Provides vision and expertise to develop and maintain the electronic resource collection; manages electronic resources in the library’s ILS
  • Leads interdepartmental library efforts to select, implement, maintain, and provide access to electronic resources, including collaborating with Burns Law Library colleagues and GWU campus libraries, coordinating with vendors and publishers, creating user awareness of the collection, coordinating and improving access to the collection, and gathering usage data
  • Identifies, evaluates, and stays current with emerging trends, resources, practices and standards in electronic resource management, usage statistics, data management, access, and discovery to enhance library services
  • Creates user awareness and supports use of the library’s electronic collection
  • Coordinates and seeks improvements in access to electronic resources, including strategic use of discovery tools, the library website, LibGuides, and the Law School portal
  • Leads review of electronic resource licenses and manages license compliance issues
  • Manages methods of user authentication for access to electronic resources, such as IP authentication, SSO , and username/password, including proxy server configuration and troubleshooting; collaborates with colleagues on content and technical matters related to access; troubleshoots access issues and provides end-user support
  • Works with colleagues to develop and oversee assessment strategies and conduct ongoing assessment and collaborate on collection development initiatives
  • Monitors subscribed content changes; content access alternatives such as deep links or APIs; and accuracy of third party-provided resource coverage data
  • Updates and customizes interfaces for electronic resource access and discovery
  • Gathers, analyzes, and formats usage data from the proxy server and vendor/publisher-supplied data for library reporting and decision-making; coordinates access to usage data for the head of cataloging and metadata to generate analytics reports
  • Monitors library ticketing system and responds to user inquiries concerning electronic resource issues
  • Drafts and implements procedures and practices for electronic resources
  • Creates and contributes to research guides, bibliographies, instructional recordings, and other finding aids and publications
  • May participate in reference and research services, including reference desk duties and the faculty liaison program
  • Participates on library, university, and consortia committees related to electronic resource management
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in library or information science (e.g., MLS ) from an ALA -accredited institution;
  • JD, LLB , or LLM from an ABA -accredited institution or completion of degree requirements by the time of appointment; and
  • Minimum of three years of post-graduate library degree experience managing electronic resource life cycle activities in an academic or law library

Advertised Salary: $80,000 - $100,000

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in a law library
  • Experience with ExLibris Alma electronic resource management and Alma Analytics; working knowledge of metadata standards and best practices
  • Experience with SaaS; online product technology/setup, including proxy server functionality and authentication protocol; web browser and operating system configuration
  • Conceptual and practical knowledge of the electronic publishing environment, including ebook platforms
  • Working knowledge of digital tools, standards and initiatives, such as link resolvers, SUSHI , COUNTER , Open URL , and KBART
  • Experience with Excel and CSV file formats
  • Demonstrated ability to promote teamwork and collaboration with the goals of fostering an efficient and positive service role for the library and forming a strong rapport with colleagues, law faculty, and law students
  • Demonstrated superior customer service skills
  • Writing skills and oral communication skills that demonstrate the ability to convey information clearly and accurately with customers, colleagues, and supervisors
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated attentiveness to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently
