Job Summary

The Director Risk Management and Patient Safety is responsible for the overall direction of the Clinical Risk Management Department. Develops policies and procedures, directs the Risk Management staff under span of control to ensure adequate staffing for the department to meet the organizational needs. Works with clinical leaders throughout the organization to minimize patient harm, provide opportunities for learning and increase organizational high reliability. Operates department within budget and in accordance with performance standards.

Pay Range

Minimum $144,630 Midpoint $191,623 Maximum $238,638

Rate of pay is determined by various factors, including but not limited to knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, education, as well as position requirements.

Experience

  • Required: Minimum five (5) years of previous experience in hospital clinical risk management. Minimum 1 year of supervisor or management level experience.
  • Preferred: Claims management, Quality, Performance Improvement, or Risk Finance experience. 2 years management level experience.

Education

  • Required: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, related health or quality field CPHRM Law Degree.

Training

  • Required: None.
  • Preferred: Background/training in Human Factors Engineering

Specialized Skills

  • Required: Inpatient Pediatric Nursing Leadership with proficiency in Power Point, leading Root Cause Analyses, Pro-active Risk Assessments, and conducting Common Cause Analysis

Broad knowledge of quality, patient safety, performance improvement, regulatory requirements, medical staff structure, peer review, and legal aspects of care. Knowledge of quality, performance improvement and patient safety programs.Able to read; write and speak with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Access; operate/troubleshoot basic office equipment required for the position. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; provide leadership; be assertive and consistent in enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple assignments; compose written material; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail.

  • Preferred: Proficient in Safety Reporting (SRS) System

Licensure

  • Required: California Registered Nurse and Certified Professional in Risk Management (CPHRM) designation
  • Preferred: Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) designation
