Under the direction of the Vice President of Diagnostic and Support Services and the Laboratory Medical Director, the Laboratory Director coordinates and is fully accountable for all daily laboratory activities including management of staff, insuring all hospital and department policies and procedures are followed, overseeing contracts with vendors involving equipment and products, and assuring the laboratory is reporting results in an accurate and timely manner. In addition, this person must also provide input and support to hospital wide committees and strategic objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Employee Management
Supports, encourages, and contributes to the professional growth of all department staff members
Selects staff that will represent the values and maintain the standards of behavior of hospital
Develops and implements job descriptions and performance standards
Evaluates staff performance
Ensures that staff is in compliance with licensure and other annual mandatory requirements
Laboratory Management
Responsible for all laboratory equipment
Responsible for the scheduling, performance, and reporting of laboratory tests
Responsible for the management of outreach programs and/or offsite laboratories
Oversees contracts involving the laboratory equipment and services
Accountable for unit productivity
Budget
Develops and recommends department operating and capital budgets
Prepares and manages FTE budget including developing staffing plans
Ensures that the department operates within budget
Develops and utilizes the budget as a planning and control tool
Customer Service
Interacts with all customers to ensure prompt and accurate communication to provide the service expected and to meet the goals of the service
Responsible for the continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided
Procedures and Regulations
Responsible for laboratory certification from all applicable inspection agencies
Directs the evaluation of new test methods
Develops and implements departmental goals and objectives with input from staff members
Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of service
Develops departmental strategic objectives and new programs
Non-Essential Duties:
Adds support to other Laboratory staff as needed during high volume, emergency, or short staffed situations
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge of departmental and hospital policies and procedures that support the provision of service
Demonstrated knowledge in identifying and selecting new staff and evaluating staff performance
Demonstrated knowledge of how laboratory results apply and affect the care and treatment of patients
Demonstrated knowledge of laws, regulations and technical standards
Demonstrated knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups and proficiency in these areas
Demonstrates knowledge of administrative and personnel policies and procedures and understands correct labor relations management
