Job Title: Director of Curriculum and Innovation

EXEMPT: Yes POSITION LEVEL: Administrative

SALARY LEVEL: Administrative DEPARTMENT: Educational Services

LOCATION: District Office, Ed. Serv. TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Month

REPORTS TO: Chief Academic Officer DATE APPROVED: 4/7/2020

SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the Director of Teaching and Learning will oversee, manage and lead the development, selection, implementation, evaluation and refinement of the District’s K-8 written, taught, and tested curriculum, and the district’s professional development plan to help schools in Pendergast District dramatically accelerate student academic achievement and become a district of first choice. S/he will ensure the organizational systems and academic programs are established to ensure all students are college and career ready. The Director of Curriculum and Innovation will oversee the development and implementation of instructional strategies throughout the district, as well as the design and implementation of assessments throughout the District. The Director of Curriculum and Innovation will coordinate the district's special programs and academies.

JOB GOAL: To oversee, evaluate, monitor, and improve all aspects of the curriculum, assessments, instruction, and student services to enhance student learning for all students.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field
  • Valid Principal or other valid Arizona Administrative Certificate
  • Commitment to the success of all students
  • Effective manager of people with the proven ability to build the capacity of others and develop leaders
  • Knowledgeable about change management and quickly able to establish credibility among team members including partners, peers, direct reports, and executive leadership
  • Ability to effectively work with and communicate to a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders for a variety of purposes, including cross-functional teams representing multiple District Office departments responsible for school effectiveness and student performance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction
  • Five years’ experience as a successful school-based principal
  • Prior district office administrative experience
  • Prior experience supervising, organizing assessments or developing curriculum and instruction

Employment Standards

SUPERVISES: The Director of Curriculum and Innovation supervises and evaluates the English Language Arts and Social Studies Coordinator, Coordinator for Staff Development, Coordinator for Language Acquisition, and the Technology Integration Specialist.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive professional learning and leadership development strategy aligned with organizational goals and instructional best practices.
  • Monitor implementation of the PESD Comprehensive Curriculum Management Plan to integrate development and use of the written, taught, and tested curriculum to provide continuity and consistency across all grade levels.
  • Coordinate the selection, implementation, and evaluation of adopted district-wide curriculum, assessments and programs to support teaching and learning.
  • Lead special program development and implementation.
  • Ensure that curricula, assessments, and special programs are designed, appropriately implemented, evaluated and refined to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Coordinate with principals in the development, implementation, and evaluation of annual goals for professional learning aligning to their school improvement plans. Consult with principals in order to help them improve their effectiveness as instructional leaders.
  • Ensure that there is an appropriate and logical alignment between the District’s academic program, curricula, assessment, and the District, State and Federal accountability programs.
  • Use multiple sources of data, including student performance data, to effect changes in curriculum, assessment, programs, teaching and leadership practices, as well as the attitudes of stakeholders about needed changes.
  • Ensure that appropriate differentiation in curricula and instruction are available to students.
  • Oversee appropriate intervention programs to support struggling students.
  • Oversee the English Learners Program and support culturally responsive instructional practices throughout the District.
  • Collaborate with the Director of School Improvement and Program Development to evaluate the implementation and impact of Title I, II, and III instructional programs.
  • Implement and oversee district initiatives in order to provide equitable educational opportunities that are intentionally inclusive of all students regardless of race, color, religious creed, ancestry, disability, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, and/or national origin.
  • Coordinate with Educational Services staff and site based instructional staff on program and curriculum development.
  • Supervise and evaluate designated staff.
  • Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board policy or evaluation of professional personnel.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions; ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several concrete variables

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education materials and programs; ability to write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, students, administration, and the community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical such as probability and statistical inference; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
