The Senior Environmental Engineer is responsible for leadership and management of the remedial portfolio for Westlake. This includes evaluation and execution of complex groundwater and other contaminated media remedies at both active manufacturing and legacy sites. Communication of remedial actions to regulatory authorities, report preparation and review, negotiation of remedies, and consultant management are typical duties. Assists accounting in determination and/or classification of remedial reserves and asset retirement obligation spending. Serves as primary in-house consultant on remedial issues. Experience with wetland development issues and prior experience with Corps of Engineers a plus. Although the role is focused on execution of corporate remedial obligations, the Senior Environmental Engineer may also be asked to complete other tasks as necessary for execution of department mission. The scope includes all company manufacturing facilities worldwide as well as retained liabilities. Acts under direction from Director, Environment and Sustainability and other senior management as required.
This location for this role includes, but are not limited to: Houston, TX; Lake Charles, LA; Baton Rouge, LA; Atlanta, GA; or other existing company locations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include, but are not limited to, the following:
Subject matter expert for internal stakeholders on remedial projects and relevant regulations.
Develop and implement strategies for managing remedial obligations and liabilities.
Assertive management of outside consultants to ensure corporate remedial goals and strategies are accomplished both short- and long-term.
Manage current active remedial portfolio and remedial reserves accounting
Lead annual potential remedial obligation exercise and report preparation.
Interface with regulatory authorities on matters concerning remediation and/or wetland development issues.
Assist with environmental due diligence when acquiring/divesting property, and plant expansions.
Lead third-party financial reserve audits.
Engage in solicitation and evaluation of SOWs from contractors and consultants
Other non-audit related HSE tasks as directed.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
BS Degree in Engineering, required.
10 years minimum experience in manufacturing, corporate, or consulting on remedial matters, required.
10+ years of demonstrated experience leading corporate-wide, large-scale remediation projects and related concerns preferred.
General knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulation applicable to chemical plant and general manufacturing required.
Strong facilitation, organization, interpersonal and computer skills, with a good working knowledge of related databases and applications, and excellent verbal and written communication abilities. Above average presentation skills required.
Capable of developing and managing multiple projects.
Exhibits positivity, passion, integrity and accountability.
Able to work in a team-oriented environment and lead team projects and collaboration.
Possesses conflict resolution skills to achieve desired outcomes.
Knowledgeable on all OSHA/EPA/DOT requirements for environmental remediation including generating and transporting hazardous wastes.
Experience with development and defense of Technical Impracticability (TI) positions is a plus.
Knowledge of solution mining of salt domes is a plus.
Working knowledge of SAP is a plus.
Ability and willingness to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
