Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • One to three years of experience working in college housing. Two years of GA experience is equivalent to one year full-time.

License/Certification Required

  • Master’s degree in College Student Development, Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Supervision

  • Direct supervision of 1-2 RDs, 6-9 RAs, and indirect supervision of 12-15 RAs
  • Oversee RD supervision of their individual halls.
  • Conduct bi-monthly one-on-one meetings with all staff.
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings with RA staff and bi-monthly area meetings with RD staff.
  • Provide on-going staff training and development.
  • Complete formal evaluations of staff once each semester.
  • Oversee management of programming and staff development budgets.
  • Work to create an environment of mutual support and encouragement of teamwork.
  • Assist with the selection and training of all student staff members.

Residential Curriculum

  • Advise the Hall Council of the building, oversee RDs in advising Hall Councils, and promote the Residence Hall Association and National Residence Hall Honorary.
  • Coordinate 1-3 Residential Learning Communities (RLCs).
  • Organize meetings of the Leadership Team at least once a month, including a spring planning retreat.
  • Collaborate with partnering departments to facilitate social and educational activities for the community on a regular basis.
  • Assist in the Leadership Team’s development of goals for the community on an annual basis.
  • Be accessible, visible and present to students in the building and area.
  • Assist in the design, development, and implementation of the Residential Curriculum
  • Organize, manage the facilitation, and assessment of the residential curriculum lesson plans
  • Provide educational and social activities in order to minimize campus behavioral issues
  • Attend staff-planned activities and educational programs
  • Develop collaborative relationships with campus partners, including designated liaisons in the Counseling and Psychological Services and University Police

Crisis Management

  • Provide leadership to staff and students during crises in the residence hall and in the greater campus community.
  • Participate in a rotating weekly on-call system providing emergency assistance to staff and residents.
  • Monitor and maintain in-hall RA duty rotation.
  • Provide duty coverage during one university break.
  • Become familiar with and follow institutional and departmental guidelines regarding emergencies.
  • Case Management for Student Wellness and Conduct
  • Review all incident reports and documentations and refer appropriate incident reports to Student Conduct.
  • Coordinate resolution of most first and second-time University Housing and Code of Conduct violations.
  • Clearly communicate, interpret and enforce department and university policies to staff and students.
  • Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavior issues and concerns.
  • Serve as the primary case manager for student concerns and intervention within the area of responsibility, including coordinating wellness checks, follow-up, and coordination with the Dean of Students.
  • Serve as a resource or referral for information concerning University life.

Administration

  • Serve on departmental committees such as RA or GA training and development, RA or GA recruitment and selection, Residential Curriculum, Assessment, etc.
  • Serve on departmental and division committees, task forces and selection committees as requested or approved by supervisor.
  • Along with the Residence Life staff team, develop and assist in achieving University Housing department goals.
  • Discuss, implement and evaluate policy-making decisions affecting Residence Life.
  • Complete semester reports for the Senior Associate Director of University Housing for Residence Life.
  • Attend staff training and professional development events in University Housing and Student Development.
  • Attend and participate in weekly Residence Life full-time meetings and bi-monthly GA meetings.
  • Attend monthly University Housing meetings and Student Development meetings when feasible.
  • Meet bi-monthly with Assistant Director of Residence Life.
  • Develop and complete a professional development plan.
  • Post and maintain office hours as required by supervisor.
  • Work closely with the Housing Administration staff regarding room changes, consolidations, occupancy reports, withdrawals, etc.
  • Perform administrative tasks as delegated by the Senior Associate Director of Residence Life.
  • Complete summer responsibilities including, but not limited to summer school, orientation, and special projects.

Facilities Management

  • Keep complete and accurate information of all residents including building rosters, room condition forms, emergency contact information, key inventories (hall and staff), etc.
  • Assume responsibility for hall opening and closing and coordinate check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Maintain monthly contact with building maintenance staff, housekeeping staff, and area supervisors.
  • Conduct fire drills in the residence hall once a semester.

Social Justice

  • Challenge colleagues and supervisees to recognize their biases and grow in their understanding of themselves and their role in social justice advocacy.
  • Identify discriminatory policies and develop solutions through collaboration with campus partners.
  • Develop and utilize skills to work with diverse student populations.
  • Maintain sensitivity to different perspectives and identities.
  • Appropriately address all bias related comments and/or behaviors.
  • Learn inclusive ways to advocate for the needs of all students.
  • Facilitate the creation of a space that promotes education of students and colleagues around topics of social justice.
  • Actively engage in reflection of personal identity and how it influences work with students and colleagues, which includes professional development opportunities.
  • Hold self, students and staff members accountable to departmental expectations of creating an inclusive environment in the residence halls.
