About Our Client

Our client is seeking a strategic, operational, growth-minded, and process-oriented Controller. Reporting to the President of the firm the Controller will be a key member of the leadership team with full responsibility for all finance and accounting operations. The Corporate Controller will implement structure around existing and new accounting processes, while not being afraid to challenge the status quo. The Firm has ambitions to grow its portfolio in 2024 and the Controller can play a pivotal role in supporting this growth.

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • OVERALL - Lead the accounting and financial reporting functions, including cash management, reporting to institutional investors and lenders, overseeing year-end audits and assisting the CFO with FP&A, including special projects as noted in the below duties.
  • PROPERTY MANAGEMENT - Assist with the oversight of the Firm's 3rd Party Property Management Services provider. The Owner serves as an asset manager for all Firm investments.
  • PRIVATE AIRPLANES/AIRCRAFT MANAGEMENT - The Firm owns two aircraft in conjunction with other partners. A separate Aircraft Management Services Company was created with 3 full-time pilots and a Director of Maintenance to manage and operate the aircraft. Assist the Assistant Controller with the monthly accounting and partner billback allocations.
  • OFFICE/HR/PAYROLL ADMINISTRATION - Manage day-to-day office functions including the Owner's personal and property/entity insurance renewals and claims, office management matters, Corporate Payroll and HR functions and all Corporate Travel.
  • BANKING & BROKERAGE RELATIONSHIPS - Maintain all banking relationships including the Firm's and Owner's personal cash balances and brokerage accounts.
  • PROJECT CONSTRUCTION DRAWS - Oversee the Firm's construction draw process for the Firm's new construction projects.
  • PROJECT CONSTRUCTION ACCOUNTING FOR RENOVATIONS - Oversee the Firm's construction accounting process for the Firm's rehab/renovation projects.
  • MONTHLY CLOSE/GENERAL ACCOUNTING/FINANCIAL STATEMENT PREP - Reconcile all balance sheet accounts monthly; review for input accuracy and prepare monthly financial statements, reports and journal entries, as needed. Provide monthly general ledger maintenance. Oversee & process all accounting and financial functions for ~20 mostly low volume tax-reporting entities with the assistance of the Firm's Assistant Controller.
  • CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - Produce quarterly consolidated financial statements across multiple different holding companies for the CFO and Owner's review.
  • FINANCIAL ANALYSIS - Analyze financial statements, comparing plan vs. actual, providing variance analysis with explanations.
  • MANAGEMENT REPORTING - Prepare monthly and annual reports of financial condition and cash flow projections for the Owner's review before distribution to all relevant parties.
  • FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the CFO's review.
  • ACQUISITION ASSISTANCE - Assist the CFO with requests regarding acquisition growth.
  • INFORMATION SYSTEMS VIA 3RD PARTY MSP - Work with the 3rd Party IT Services Provider to assist with streamlining various operations.
  • ANNUAL BUDGETING - Prepare annual operating budgets for the Firm's Corporate Office and the Owner's Family Estate.
  • PROCESS IMPROVEMENT/KPI/DASHBOARDS - The Owner is very interested in creating operational efficiencies through streamlining various processes using more technologically advanced ways to process information. To this end, the Firm is in process of installing SharePoint and creating dashboards with KPI on various aspects of the Firm's operations. This is separate from the 3rd Party Property Management Services provider software, RealPage, which the Owner has full access to when needed.
  • AUDIT ASSISTANCE - Review audits on all required properties and work with accounting Firm and 3rd Party Property Management Services provider to ensure audits are correct.
  • INCOME TAXES - Work with the Firm's external CPA to prepare information, and manage, review and file income and franchise tax reporting including partnerships, limited liability companies, S-corporations, individual, gift, estate and trust tax estimates and returns.
  • OTHER - Other reporting, special projects and information requests as needed/requested. Maintain financial document retention files.
  • MANAGERIAL & SUPERVISORY - Manage AR, AP, and Corporate functions, with the assistance of the Assistant Controller.
  • SUPERVISORY - Direct supervision of the Assistant Controller, Senior Accountant and AP.
  • LEADERSHIP - Foster teamwork between accounting/finance and all other Firm functions.

The Successful Applicant

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or related fields with 8+ years of relevant real estate finance experience. The ideal candidate will have a majority of their experience spent in the multifamily housing sector. Other sectors in commercial real estate will be considered. Other key qualities:

  • Controller Experience in CRE or Related Industry
  • 10+ Years of Experience
  • Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • MS Office Proficiency - Excel in particular
  • Real Page Accounting (Investment Management is a plus)
  • Excellent working knowledge of GAAP
  • At least 5 years of hands-on FPA/Accounting experience
  • Real Page Accounting

What's On Offer

Strong basic salary plus bonus potential; base salary roughly $130,000 - $150,000 depending on experience.
