The Consular Section of the Embassy
Our main role is to represent, protect and administer the Belgian community established in and around Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. Along with the Consulates General in Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York, we deliver administrative services such as civil status acts, notary acts, passports, etc.
Job Description
Under the direction of the Consul General, you are responsible for implementing Belgian law in the following fields: citizenship, notary services, visas, and identity documents. You process applications in compliance with national and European regulations. On a daily basis, you deal with Belgian and foreign citizens, and provide the highest level of customer service. You communicate with various internal and external stakeholders and you propose decisions to the Consul General. You ensure the filing and archiving of finished files. You collect consular fees and keep the accounts. Finally, as versatility is indispensable within our team, you will also be asked to fill in for co-workers in charge of other consular matters on a regular basis.
Conditions of Employment
· Gross monthly salary: $5,378. The starting salary may be higher, depending on the recognition of relevant prior experience.
· A one-year contract, with the possibility of a permanent contract afterwards. Contracts fall under U.S. law.
· 24 days of paid annual leave, in addition to 14 official holidays.
· Top-notch health insurance, with 85% employer’s contribution.
· A desirable international work environment with short communication channels and few hierarchical levels.
· On-site.
Requirements
· Either be a U.S. citizen, a Legal Permanent Resident (green card), or have a valid visa with an Employment Authorization Document.
· Fluency in English and Dutch or French.
· User knowledge of the other Belgian national language (Dutch or French).
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.
· Very high degree of integrity, trustworthiness and confidentiality.
· Ability to work under pressure, set priorities and organize workloads to meet deadlines.
· User knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Sharepoint, Teams, etc.).
· Flexibility and ability to work well individually and as part of a team.
Assets
· Prior work experience in government administration, public service or a visa office.
