Job Description:

Mount Holyoke College is a highly selective, non denominational, residential, research liberal arts gender diverse women’s college with 2,200 undergraduate students in South Hadley, Massachusetts. As part of the Division of Student Life, the Department of Student Engagement, which includes Be Well, Community Standards, Orientation, Student Involvement, and Residential Life, partners with Mount Holyoke College students in creating and engaging in inclusive, compassionate and authentic communities by challenging & supporting students as they navigate living and participating in a residential college experience.

Job Purpose

The Associate Director of Orientation and Transition Programming will provide oversight of and creative direction for programs and services that support student transitions, in service of the goals of the Department of Student Engagement and Division of Student Life. This includes leading the implementation of new student orientation, in collaboration with campus partners, and directly supervising Orientation Captains and Leaders. The Associate Director will support and lead components of the sophomore initiative and the first year living-learning experience, which will include advising key student groups and residential communities. They will also be involved in the implementation of the College's residential curriculum, which serves to provide all students with a robust co-curricular learning experience.

The Associate Director of Orientation and Transition programming will support the efforts of large scale office sponsored events, including the implementation of Family and Friends Weekend, office communication and marketing efforts, and participate in campus wide committees as needed. The Associate Director serves in the Tier 2 On-Call rotation.

The Associate Director is a 12-month live-on position. A partially furnished apartment with utilities included will be provided. Responsibilities do include some evening, holiday and weekend commitments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead in the development and design of the New Student Orientation and Welcome Back programs, including schedule creation, service order submissions, and working directly with other offices to assist in content development.
  • Oversee the recruitment, selection, training, of the new student orientation team.
  • Directly supervise 2-3 Orientation Captains and assist in the supervision of 20 orientation leaders.
  • Oversee our Sophomore Reorientation Programming
  • Develop and oversee programming that connects to our Residential Curriculum to help continuing education for our new students transition to campus, including Engage MHC and beyond.
  • Serve as one of the liaisons for the First Year Living Learning Community.
  • Support first year housing application reviews to learn more about the incoming class.
  • Provide support for student involvement and leadership initiatives, including working with the Student Involvement Consultants, as well as programming that happens in the Student Involvement Studio
  • Serve as the Advisor for the First Year Class Board.
  • Co-lead efforts in regards to student leader training for the Division of Student Life student staff.
  • Manage and oversee our Friends and Family Weekend programming in October.
  • Support Student Engagement initiatives and annual events.
  • Participate in the Professional Staff on Call rotation and provide crisis intervention in emergency situations including contact with Public Safety and Service, Health and Counseling Services, and direction to paraprofessional staff.
  • Attend staff meetings, and serve on campus committees, as needed and assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
