Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Educational Technologies leads and oversees the Instructional Technologists within the Educational Technology team as well as the part-time staff. The Assistant Director also works closely with instructional technologists, departmental program managers and vendors to ensure courses are delivered in a high-quality manner from a technical perspective and that the learning experiences offer the full advantage of the technical capabilities of the respective platforms while reflecting pedagogical best practices.

The Assistant Director collaborates with different stakeholders on new ways of delivering innovative courses, keeps current with industry developments regarding new offerings in the market, and ensures the course support resources are current. They are also responsible for researching and championing new technologies and processes within the area. and work closely with the Manager of Learning Technologies, especially in supporting the University LMS .

Essential Functions

Responsible for the Instructional Technologist team

  • Oversees Instructional Design consultants
  • Directs team to research technological developments in teaching and learning and communicates that work to the faculty.
  • Leads and participates in planning, implementing and coordinating training.
  • Assists in developing and implementing faculty ‘self help and self study’ programs
  • Develops Develops training curricula and implementation both for faculty

General Educational Technology

  • Actively meets, plans, and co-teaches with classroom teachers using a variety of educational technology tools as needed
  • Participates in the design, coordination, staffing and delivery of educational technology workshops, and research and/or provides individual training opportunities for teachers to ensure the best use of technology
  • Develops and delivers instruction around all areas of Education Technology
  • Confers with management to determine the need for new technology resources
  • Develops and implements a procedure for the evaluation of software, hardware, and courseware, and for the sharing of results of such evaluation
  • Works with the rest of the team and the IT Communications Manager on the continual development and reorganization of the internal website and resources
  • Addresses questions from the parent/student community that may arise by creating information pages (FAQ’s, fact sheets etc.) on the external website
  • Participates in extracurricular events related to ed tech as needed
  • Consults with faculty, in general, on implementing best practices in using technology, as needed
  • Provides assistance to faculty in development of technology-based teaching methods and materials
  • Provides ‘one on one’ and leads small group technology training sessions
  • Supervises/manages graduate and undergraduate student assistants
  • Curates and creates training materials to accommodate self-learners and provides resources for faculty
  • Acts as an information point regarding the latest technological development and trends in education and scholarship

Hybrid Flex Support

  • Provides instructional design consultation for teaching with technology in fully online, hybrid or blended learning environments
  • Provides professional guidance to faculty on designing, producing and maintaining instructional content for the most effective delivery of course materials
  • Researches and communicates on new technological developments in teaching and learning
  • Researches new instructional technologies for viability within instructional/classroom setting and advise management on equipment and training needs
  • Makes appropriate recommendations to departments and/or the campus regarding IT equipment purchases
  • Occasionally works as a course designer, helping faculty design, develop and produce media elements for courses and other projects

Educational Technology Support

  • Ensures the Educational Technology team provides Tier-3 support of Blackboard Learn, Fordham’s Learning Management System, among other Educational Technology tools and that tickets and emails are closed and routed correctly
  • Ensures training to Tier 1 and 2 support on Blackboard, Panopto, and other teaching technologies at the university is provided as required

General Asst Director Functions

  • Managerial responsibility within a function, with responsibility for setting expectations, defining roles and coaching team members, hiring and staffing, staff development and succession
  • Challenges and enhances analytical approaches or tools
  • Reviews and validates analysis, and develops recommendations in context of functional area or full project
  • Facilitates constructive communication across the team
  • Ensures team awareness of and familiarity with industry

Management Responsibilities Supervises the work of other Fordham employees who are individual contributors. Responsible for hiring, training and developing, managing performance and administering corrective action. Has significant input in compensation decisions.

Additional Functions

Assistive Technologies Advocate

  • Researches and advocates for solutions on assistive technology issues for the university community
  • Reviews systems and processes currently in place and those proposed to be rolled out at the university, advising on their acceptability
  • Provides guidance around accessible and inclusive approaches to campus community members, increasing awareness of electronic information technology accessibility to address barriers.

Liaises with the Office of Disability Services and the Faculty Working Group on Disability Studies

Liaison and Collaborations

  • Acts as the educational technology liaison to specific departments as assigned.
  • Works in close collaboration with various parts of the Office of Information Technology, especially with Client Services, as well as the various deans offices and other departments within the University.

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, or in lieu of degree, 7+ years relevant experience
  • 7+ years of relevant experience

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of teaching environment, curriculum development and processes
  • Analytical/problem solving and technical skills
  • Developing and delivering presentations of technical matters in a clear and understandable manner
  • Customer service
  • Ability to interact professionally with staff, faculty and students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • Demonstrated understanding of Fordham’s culture and environment, as well as the technical, business and cultural environment of higher education in general
  • Demonstrated expertise in:
    • Planning and designing complex systems architectures, specifications and applications
    • Vendor management, determination of needs, RFP , etc.
    • Execution of project plans and delivery of results
    • Developing innovative solutions to align with University strategy
Minimum Starting Salary $81,600

Maximum Starting Salary $102,000
