About The College-Conservatory Of Music

The University of Cincinnati's nationally ranked and internationally renowned College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is a preeminent institution for the performing and media arts. The school’s educational roots date back to 1867, and a solid, visionary instruction has been at its core since that time.

Declared "one of this country's leading conservatories" by the New York Times, CCM offers 10 degree types (BA, BFA, BM, MFA, MA, MM, MME, AD, DMA, PhD) in approximately 120 possible majors, along with a variety of pre-collegiate and post-graduate programs and workshops. The college also offers academic minors in both media production and music. The synergy created by housing CCM within a comprehensive public university gives the college its unique character and defines its objective: to educate and inspire the whole artist and scholar for positions on the world stage.

CCM’s student enrollment for Fall 2023 totaled 1,403. This number included 883 undergraduate students and 520 graduate students. CCM’s current student population comes to Cincinnati from 41 different states and 41 different countries. International students represent roughly 23% of the student body.

CCM provides students with professionally oriented immersive experiences in order to prepare them to enter directly into performing and media arts careers. As the largest single source of performing arts events in Ohio, CCM presents nearly 1,000 major public performances each year. Students are involved in each step of the process from planning to performing, both on stage and behind-the-scenes.

CCM's dynamic and influential alumni network includes over 14,300 artists, teachers, entrepreneurs, researchers, leaders and professionals who are active in the arts on a global scale. Many of the college’s graduates have achieved notable success in the performing and media arts, and 97% of recent graduates are currently working or continuing their education.

About The Division Of Composition, Musicology, And Theory (CMT)

CCM’s Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory (CMT) offers student composers, musicologists, and theorists opportunities to create original works, understand the social and historical contexts of music, and develop analytical procedures. The division places great emphasis on merging the theoretical with the practical in biennial graduate student conferences, an in-house and student-run journal (Music Research Forum), residencies by leading composers, and the Thinking About Music lecture series featuring distinguished speakers. It serves as a resource for all music students, enriching the creative and intellectual life of CCM and of the broader university community.

Coursework for the graduate degrees in musicology (MM, PhD) and music theory (MM, PhD) is wide-ranging and rigorous, offering students a unique opportunity to pursue an academic discipline in a performance-oriented school. The BM, MM, and DMA degrees in composition include one-on-one composition lessons and ample opportunities to work with CCM ensembles and community organizations for hearings and performances. CCM is also home to the Center for Computer Music, which offers opportunities for research and composition using technology, and the Alexander Zemlinsky Prize for Composition, a competition for young composers from around the world.

Job Overview

The Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory seeks part-time faculty members to teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in musicology, such as Musicology 1, Topics in Musicology, and Graduate Research and Writing, on a limited basis.

Adjunct faculty members design course content compatible with the aims of the college and division and work with a culturally diverse population of conservatory students. Candidates will draw on their scholarly interests and expertise to critically engage musical practices, repertoires, and research techniques through their teaching.

Essential Functions

  • Teach assigned undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in musicology
  • Supervise graduate teaching assistants assigned to these courses, as applicable
  • Respond in a timely manner to all University-related communications
  • Engage in other activities ancillary to or in support of these responsibilities

Required Education

Completed PhD or DMA in any music field

Required Experience

Specialization in musicology as evidenced by (1) doctoral dissertation or (2) research publication or presentation or (3) substantial doctoral coursework equivalent to a minor or cognate.

Additional Qualifications Considered

Prior university-level teaching experience in musicology
