Whilst its hard to see that any progress has been made, to the contrary - it looks like 0 progress made and everything got worse, with recent years breaking through the 1.5C targets. We mustn't give up hope that the many initiatives that have been kicked off as a result of these agreements, have prevented worse things from happening... too optimistic? maybe But working in the sustainability and SDG space has never been more exciting, with many people sharing that a just transition to a more sustainable, de-growth and circular economy is, ...possible. The questions is how fast, to prevent worse things from happening (Climate Catastrophy, Ecological Collapse, ...the list is getting longer). Currently the ANNUAL financing gap to the 2030 SDGs is (according to UN estimates), around $4 trillion. This is the same as Germany's or Japan's Gross Domestic Product. This is a staggering number and concept that the money missing to achieve the SDGs is the same as the monetary value of ALL finished goods and services made in Germany or Japan on an annual basis. And yet, the world economy is worth around $100 Trillion, so $4 trillion = 4%. That ...almost...sounds doable? too optimistic? maybe When it comes to asset managers, total discretionary assets under management (AUM) of the 500 biggest managers amounted to USD 113.7 trillion at the end of 2022, down by 13.7% from the end of 2021. The largest, BlackRock, manages $10 trillion and the next biggest 2, Vanguard ($9 trillion) and Fidelity ($4 trillion). Surely, investing into solutions on a planet that is actually liveable with resources being consumed at a sustainable pace is what its at? Otherwise, what will be managed in 20 or 30 years?

As we close out #CelebrateDiversityMonth, we wanted to provide an update on Colorado's Crown Act and the proposed Racial Equity Study Bill, which take significant steps forward in promoting diversity and addressing historical injustices while also working towards creating a more equitable and inclusive Colorado. #BRICFundCO proudly supports community-led efforts that fuel systemic change, which is why advocacy and policy are critical to improving our communities. In 2020, Colorado passed the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act (CROWN Act), a legislative initiative prohibiting discrimination based on hairstyle and hair texture. Today, the Colorado legislative bill HB24-1451 seeks to amend the Crown Act to include hair length. The #CrownAct ensures that all individuals have the right to wear their natural hair without fear of discrimination in employment, education, housing, and public accommodations. It acknowledges that natural hair is inherent to one's identity and cultural expression and should be celebrated and respected rather than stigmatized or penalized. The bill will appoint a commission to study and understand how long-term discrimination, resulting in racial disparities, has harmed Black Coloradans. The two-year study, sponsored by Democratic Senate President Pro Tem James Coleman and driven by Chic Denver, a local nonprofit supported by the BRIC Fund, seeks to measure the economic repercussions and propose solutions to rectify the impact. This excellent research paper from my colleagues @Caroline Greenhalgh and Professor Paul Montgomery is a must-read if, like me, you are deeply compelled by the idea that we must engage, mobilise and support wealth-holders to give more and better. Firstly, it re-enforces the finding of their prior paper 'Seeing is Believing' (2023) where among high net wealth individuals, peer endorsement is more prevalent than evidence-seeking, or often precedes evidence-seeking when it occurs. So we now know what we know we knew. Wealth-holders are not displaying the critical appraisal tools at their disposal when giving major gifts to charities. This is incongruent with their professional backgrounds and the experiences we can surmise they have lived. Why might that be? In PolicyLink's series in Stanford Social Innovation Review so far, our colleagues have explored what achieving a flourishing multiracial democracy requires of each of us, and what it could begin to look like for governments. In this new installment written by Jeff Bradach and I, we explore what this foundational change will require of nonprofit institutions. To play their part, our institutions will need to embrace their own transformation, build from a past rooted in charity and move toward a model of liberation—a future where our laws, regulations, customs, and institutions are structured so all people can thrive.  This work calls us to struggle, and may look different depending on a nonprofit’s starting point, mission, assets, and challenges. Hard decisions will need to be made and missteps will happen. Until we bring love and accountability to our internal practices, external partnerships, and the nonprofit sector more broadly, we cannot expect to realize a nation where everyone can flourish.
