How can active listening help you avoid biases and assumptions about your audience?
Helpful to abate the challenges of active listening, stay neutral (neither approve/oppose) what the person is talking about. Our personal values on religion, politics, or other topics can become entrenched solidifying "my way is the only way". When we listen with that mindset we can never hear, understand and cannot have empathy. It's ok to be committed to our values, but if we want to be compassionate and understanding to what another wants us to listen to, we must be just as committed to acknowledging to ourselves that it's ok if others have opposing views. We must keep in mind that behind their words, they're looking to be seen, be understood. Listening to the meaning between the words in neutral posture is where we could do that.

What themes do successful public speaking stories share?
One thing I know to be true from my life experience is that TRANSFORMATION is a necessary to bring actualize change in their mindset or behavior in order to satisfy their desire relating to their life situations. Persuading my audience with my personal story of transformation and stories of Shakespear's plays and people in recent history and how they transformed. But also, persuade them with seeing the benefits and use my voice tone to do so would help. I would talk about the impossible being possible and ask questions like "why wouldn't you want..." or "how do you see yourself after the transformation?" I would end with them standing up shaking their bodies a bit, seeing their self image after transformation, saying YES I CAN DO IT!

How can you improve your body language when presenting with active listening?
Among many things to keep in mind prior to a public speaking event is to do some homework prior and investigate what the demographics and general characteristics your audience has in common. With this information you can tailor your topic relevant and interesting to your audience. If possible with the information gathered about your audience, imagine what kind of lives these people live and try to find something within your own life experience that may be relatable to your audience, and try to incorporate this into your topic in a light hearted way or with humor. With confidence in your voice and posture, look at your audience as if you were talking to a very dear friend and with the tone of voice of a trusted friend, make your point.
