Starting Monday, I will do a 45-day challenge to rebuild Fonoster from scratch. The Mary Meeker of Measurement Jonah Goodhart at the #IABtechlabs event with slides presented ~200 in 20 minutes. It was so good that I heard about it in real time from London! "The $700 Billion Problem and the Future of Measurement" is about re-defining the new realities and opportunities for marketers investing nearly $1T across all forms of advertising. With such complexity, marketers are still trying to answer the same questions that we've been asking: -Planning - how do I allocate investments to maximize the potential impact? -Proof of Performance - Are my ads being delivered, fraud free, brand safe and where I expected/contracted? -Relevance - Are they being delivered to the right audiences with the right messages? -What are the metrics of impact that are vital to my business based the brand, mid and lower funnel metrics? -What is the costs associated with the full cycle of advertising, such that more of the investments reach the publishers (or as P&G says the consumers)? As we consolidate the very fragmented media supply chain, and apply programmatic concepts, new privacy regimes and AI, measurement at all points in the process take center stages. Is the AI-Infrastructure and GPU mania a repeat of the fiber-optic and data-center boom-to-bust of the late 1990s and early 2000s? Or am I just making an overly simplistic comparison? $7.5 billion loan for what is essentially a re-seller of computing infrastructure.

Observability data is untapped goldmine of information, but when the time comes (in the middle of incident), it still requires "expert" skills to find the needle in the haystack. NEW PODCAST - I chatted with Zane Ball former head of data centers, current head of AI for Intel Corporation about everything the energy business needs to hear from Silicon Valley about the continued growth of the Cloud and AI. Zane’s pretty thoughtful and lays out the Uber Electricty demand case AND a more moderate case for power demand. His key premise is that market forces are pretty powerful: how much AI will we be willing to pay for? Energy prices will drive innovations and there’s a lot of potential for continued developments in energy efficiency. This is a must listen for anyone in the energy business because if we aren’t courting Silicon Valley, they’ll choose nukes and not natural gas. RCS is the advancement on SMS that’s now the default protocol on Google Messages—Android’s iMessage equivalent. That’s won’t be the case on iPhone, and instead we expect RCS to run in parallel. Put simply, green bubbles will remain green, albeit they’ll be RCS and not just SMS, which means the functionality will improve.

Ray Rike had a great analysis of the Net Revenue Retention Rate (combining public data from Jamin Ball and private company data from Benchmarkit for private companies). We continue to see NRR drop, and as pointed out in Ray's post, this means real enterprise value decreases for companies that can't fix the leaky buckets. 🔥 I love how the new category of "Network Management" software has been emerging this year, helping people make and receive better introductions through the strength of their networks. Last year we launched a new product called GetroConnect - Getro's niche-focused network management solution for VC/PE - and now have ~80 customers using the product. Power that powers LLMs ! After a decade of flat power growth in the U.S, the rapid growth of AI and related industries is projected to significantly increase U.S. electricity demand by up to 20% by 2030, according to a Wells Fargo analysis. AI data centers alone may add 323 terawatt hours of electricity demand, seven times greater than New York City's current consumption of 48 terawatt. For folks working on Conversational AI - what is your network latency and jitter budget for great QoE? I assume good QoE would mean less than 400 ms of round trip delay and very consistent delay (jitter). Appreciate any insights! #conversationalAI #artificialintelligence Came to mind after seeing a demo and the mobile device was connected to the network via USB-C-based Ethernet - to factor out network delay.

New on the Review: Conventional wisdom teaches managers to avoid “anti-patterns,” general practices that are deemed unproductive, like micromanaging. But Will Larson, a veteran engineering leader and CTO at Carta, argues that not every anti-pattern is bad, and makes a case for the three that eng execs should explore: 🔍 1) Shying away from micromanaging. “New engineering managers are often advised to ‘step away from the code.’ But an extremely high-functioning exec understands the domain they are operating in at some level of detail,” he says. “As you get too far out of the details, you just become a bureaucrat. Too many well-meaning engineering managers end up as bureaucrats.” 📏 2) Pushing back on flawed metrics. “Often when people start measuring, there's always a concern that their measurement is flawed. And that's true for all functions,” he says. “But I’m a believer in measuring something imperfect, but useful, versus holding out for the perfect metric while measuring nothing in the interim.” ☔ 3) Serving as the umbrella for your team. “In the past, I used to think I was energizing my team by sparing them the details. But now it feels like lying to them,” he says. On a tactical level, Larson adjusted this habit by buffering less information. “That means even if it’s disappointing for folks, I’d rather them process news bit by bit, rather than deal with a huge ocean of mess all in one moment.” Link to the full article in the comments.
