Yesterday, I ran a GTMsession for GTMfund portfolio company founders and their executive teams with the brand and content marketing legend, Udi Ledergor 🏳‍🌈. (🤔 GTM what now? GTMfund… GTMnow…) Yes, we have more words attached to the acronym GTM, though not widely talked about since they’re internal. GTMsessions are monthly private digital live sessions on various go-to-market topics, led by an executive operator who is an expert in the field. They’re available to GTMfund portfolio companies and their executive teams. Being closed-door and not open to the public, these sessions allow any and all questions to be comfortably asked, the conversation tailored to be hyper-specific to startups and their current concerns, questions, etc. We didn't even get through half of the moderated points that I had prepared because the questions for Udi just kept rolling in (a good thing, that's the point of these sessions). Udi dropped some 🔥 insights that we’ll share more on later, but for now, Stan Rymkiewicz nailed summarizing key takeaways on how Gong thinks about content creation and distribution that I've dropped in the comments. One key pain point discussed in the session was the challenge of keeping up with the ever-changing landscape of content marketing. It often feels like by the time one strategy is implemented, its effectiveness has already diminished. So, what’s next? How do you stay ahead of the curve? Why your primary metric matters in a/b testing: It’s not always about transaction rate; the metric should be closely tied to the specific change you're testing. For example, if you're tweaking a product detail page (PDP), "adds to cart" would be a more relevant primary metric than transactions. The other day I met with a founder & CTO who advises and scales early stage companies - with several successful exits under their belts. We talked about “what exactly is Rev Ops” and how if done right - we are a lean / mean strategic investment to drive GTM operations at scale. Many founders are doing exactly this type of work. But when a founder has to focus on sales, or marketing, or pmf, or, or, or….who is taking this lens. So we talked about the purposeful investments in ops and the strategic need for Rev Ops. Driving cross business alignment of gtm operations, tooling, data, and business strategy that fuels the revenue creation engine. Knowing what levers to pull by when, how, and to what outcome. The Product Marketing Alliance just issued their 2024 State of #PMM report.... And one REALLY telling survey chart has to do with the PMM TechStack. Dominating the list are core tools (analytics, reporting, CRM, collaboration, market research etc.). These are *great* benchmarks to help younger PMM teams decide where their gaps lie. But what I find interesting is that there are also a number of Demand Generation items on the list (email marketing, video marketing). Shouldn't these be owned by other teams? Excellent lessons learned and analogies by Preston 🩳 Rutherford. If you focus to much on perceived growth by focusing on a specific KPI you miss the bigger picture of overall brand health. The soccer analogy for attribution not only applies to DTC, but B2B.
