The CURIOUS case of 𝑶𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈   Options trading has ‘𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐬’ for everybody whether traders, brokers or the regulators. Not because it is helping make huge wealth but because of the sheer size of Options trading in India.   India is now world’s biggest Derivative market and have the World’s highest Derivative to cash ratio of 421 times, some expect this to touch 1000𝐗 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬.    But what exactly happened in a country like India where 5 years back everybody thought options trading would only be like a ‘𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞’ in the whole trading bouquet. Even some brokers written off the options trading future, stating Indians cannot trade in such a so called ‘Complex’ products.   But reality is the king   Lets understand what are the triggers:   1.     𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐲: There is only one thing which is 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 in markets is the time decay. Trend is nobody’s friend and uncertainty is flavour of markets. Options trader could only strategise and play around the Theta decay strategy and with weekly options coming in. Suddenly a huge breed of Retail and non retail investors started strategizing and making strategies which had daily theta decay, instead of waiting for 1 month, money was made, volumes grown exponentially 2.     𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: Machines have ZERO emotions, that is the only essential required today to win consistently, with weekly expiry, superb API, Machine learning tools, Algo trading tools. The flood gates were open and the option’s wave got the ‘ kick’ it needed 3.     𝐇𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬: The icing on the cake for an option strategy trader was to get margin benefit of the hedge trade which anyways he had to take, this boosted the space, volume and in turn ROI for options traders 4.     𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲: Every other option trader calls themselves ‘ Option master’ create detailed Option strategy videos with technical setup, payoffs, backtesting, bar replay etc. Indians who love to swipe and scroll full day, got a good opportunity to ‘ learn and earn’ and so the Buy/Sell option buttons got clicked a billion times. ( although I strongly suggest not to trade based on advice of any unregistered entity and always put SL while trading) 5.     𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐣𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐲: Trading becoming more easier and faster then sipping your coffee, millennials, housewives, businessman, professionals all started trading ‘ on the go’ Today around 80% of broking revenues for stock brokers come via options trading and super cool and useful option platforms are being build by product managers. This is just the beginning and as the Indian trader moves ‘ Up the learning curve’ 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐤𝐲 𝘗𝘚: 𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺.

One of my connect’s question on DM was - “Do you think markets can have further steam on the election day?” I am sure this question will be there on everyone’s mind. So let’s try to understand what has happened historically in the markets when the unexpected happens. 1. When BJP was voted out in 2004. Markets tanked brutally. 2. When UPA came to power in 2009 markets were on circuit. 3. If you see 2014 when Modi formed the government then too markets rallied strong. 4. In 2019 everyone’s expectation was that BJP would get thrashed. At least that was the buzz created by the media. Markets were down during the early part of May, but soon put in a very strongly rally around the results and the rally continued in June too. 5. This time too anti incumbency and extremely strong media narrative that BJP may not get the majority has been built. The other narrative doing the rounds is BJP will form the government but their performance may be around the same benchmark of 303/354 (BJP/NDA) During the 2024 campaign Modi built a narrative of 400+. Now there were many naysayers and nobody believes these nos. However there are some mavericks like me who believe that 450 is also possible. But the 400+ bandwagon is not what many will expect. Even if the narrative shifts to 400+ over the next 10 days, it is one thing to say 400+ and actually get there. If the magical 400+ is achieved then there will be fire crackers in the markets (notwithstanding the fact that we are trading near ATH) given the following will see visibility in Modi 3.0. 400+ on the board in favour of the BJP/NDA essentially means A. a tight slap to the face of these anti national LGBTQXYZ vocalist western war mongering cabal. B. It means INC getting <40, career over for the G family and break up of INC. C. North South fragmentation narrative of DMK gets over. D. India UN permanent membership. E. Break up of Pakistan out of sheer fright 😜 and possibly end of the Ukraine War. F. Global rise of nationalism and Soros sucking his own #%^$. G. Akhand Bharat movement starts with taking back of POK, Bhutan merging with India, possibly even Nepal & Sri Lanka toying with the idea and India staking claim to Tibet (against China’s claims on Aksai and Arunachal. H. End of Khalistani narrative once and for all during 2024-2029. I. Implementation of UCC, NRC, population Control Bill, Judicial and Police reforms. J. India becoming 3rd in GDP tables with $ 1 trillion exports and INR:USD at 1:3 (wishful thinking) Please add anything that I have missed in your aspirations for a #ViksitBharat

Stopping BJP from getting absolute majority is what INDI Alliance has been tomtomming as a major victory. Lets run the math. BJP won 240 seats in 2024. In all 3 previous elections added together INC won 195 seats in all (2014 + 2019 + 2024). Even their combines score of 3 elections is not good enough to beat Modis lowest! And the irony of it is that they say they have won😂😂 And while they run memes from the INC X handle on mehengai during BJP government they have today evening increased by ₹ 3 /litre on petrol & diesel in Karnataka. Cess On Petrol To 29.84% From 25.92% Cess On Diesel To 18.44% From 14.34% Need to fund Butti Bhagya, Grihalakshmi freebies. Enjoy Hindus. Now inflation is going to go खटाखट.. फटाफट फटाफट. 💨💨 As if this was not enough, the disillusioned INC team believes that they now have a veritable chance of forming the government. NDA Alliance is at 303 vs their 241. And while the BJP was stopped short of simple majority, the coverage of BJP in ruling India has only gone up. Just check this map And while the the Muslims (18%) voted exclusively for INDI alliance exclusively in Vote Jih@d, they were able to get only 22-23% of the total vote share. Which means that while having a starting score of 18% they could only get 4-5% vote share on their own. W What a tragedy! Yes the INDI Alliance was able to split the Hindus vote to a large extent by using false informations. Yes they used the entire global forces of the West - print media. They restricted NDA candidates SM footprint while boosting their own. They used AI to influence voter mind. In fact they spent all their bullets to win #LS2024. They also had the added benefit of sourpuss BJP candidates (denied tickets) to spoil the BJP equation and the RSS (allies of BJP) working at cross purposes of their own interests. Yet they were not able to surpass the NDA seat count. In war you never use all your weapons. The Russians have not even used a fraction of their advanced weaponry in the Ukraine conflict. But the INC put everything that they had at stake. And yet they lost. And on top of it they are using the art of multiple repetitions to spin the narrative that they have won the elections. In psychological terms they are referred to as delusional. To understand the magnitude of Modi coming to power for the third time you have to understand that at the G7 Macron (France), Rishi Sunak (UK) Sholz (Germany) Justin Trudeau (Canada) Fumio Kishida (Japan) Joe Biden (lowest ever popular rating of 36%, USA) have either lost or are set to lose their seat to Right Wing Nationalist parties. In fact #Melodi - Modi and Meloni are the only two who will remain in power. And Modi has been around for 10 and will be around for another 5 years. He has been a right wing natiionalist despite global leftist forces holding sway on the global seat of power since the last decade. Ladies and Gentleman Modi won BIG!

Dear All, 🔸 There is this old saying - A rising tide lifts all boats 🚢 which is true in a lot of scenarios, However currently where a lot of momentum is there in midcaps and smallcaps, focusing on quality stocks from a risk-reward perspective (both from trading & investing perspective) will be paramount and will differentiate amateurs from the seasoned traders. 🔸 Post high volatility in the Election result week, the last 2 weeks have been complete rangebound for the Index as volatility in the Index was just 1.2% & 1% respectively. India VIX, too, has seen a major cool-off in past few weeks signaling diminishing fear from the market participants with most of the key events now out of the way. 🔸 Apart from macroeconomic factors, earnings growth & valuations that would be important triggers going forward, focus will also be on the Progress of Monsoon as well as the Union Budget in the 3rd week of July Month. 🔸 While FIIs have significantly covered their short positions in Index Futures from 87% at beginning of the series to 43% on June 21st, they have been consistently selling in Cash Segment. Since the beginning of 2024, FIIs have sold approximately Rs 1,29,117 Cr while DIIs have emerged as strong performers as they turned buyers to the tune of Rs 2,29,801 Cr, completely absorbing the FII selling in Cash for the CY till date. 🔸 Over the past week, Nifty ended on a flat note fluctuating within a narrow range of 265 points, the tightest weekly range observed in the past 9 weeks. 🔸 Focus has been clearly on the Banking & Financial space with Bank Nifty breaking out on the upside. While broader markets i.e Nifty Midcap, as well as Smallcap indices have continued to outperform Nifty in the week gone by, sector rotation was clearly visible with Banking / IT space outperforming. Usual outperformers i.e Cap Goods, Auto & Oil & Gas space witnessed profit booking from higher levels ending the week with 2-2.5% cut each. 🔸 Chart patterns suggest, amidst ongoing consolidation, 13 Day EMA zone of 23250-23300 on Nifty Spot, would act as crucial support for the Index while the first level on the upside, which the Index could move towards 23750-23780 followed by 24000. Public Sector Units (or "PSUs") have been getting leaner and more focused on core competencies on account of a number of policy reforms by the government. Global hedge funds fighting over the "secret" trading strategy. The controversial strategy pertains to trading options in India. I wonder if the said traders were also milking theta decay by shorting straddles/strangles which nearly half the people in Indian markets are already doing (more unsystematically though). Whats the big secret really. Will be interesting when the facts come out. Pace of money raising by corporates via secondary offers and IPOs has suddenly picked up steam. If FII inflows don’t keep pace then the DII + SIPs may be competing with new paper offerings. Time for a small correction?

A recent opinion piece in LiveMint catalyzed a train a thought on CBDCs. As one of the earliest students of the instrument and its potential financial stability implications, in my assessment, the RBI might want to bear the following pointers in mind: {Note that these observations pertain to R- CBDC}. -Going for a wide adoption of CBDC will be unhelpful given India has both a scaled RTP and a large deposit insurance umbrella. { More on this below} -RBI should aim for deeper & narrower adoption ( verticalized) for the R- CBDC if they are to scale the project. Find one or few hero use- cases. {See more below} -Pitch that this is a CB liability is pointless in a world with deposit insurance. A Financial consumer would care who is on the other side of a savings / custodial instrument in a world where deposit insurance does not exist. In a world with a large deposit insurance backstop, network effects will operate in favor of "Bank money". It's math. - Bells & whistles like programmability may make it incrementally attractive but these are already available on card artefacts and indeed UPI to a limited degree as well. Likewise, we already have social payments infrastructure on AePS that delivers at scale. CBDC will be also- ran along these use- cases. -Borrowing an insight from Peter Thiel's "Zero to One", to gain adoption, CBDCs have to be 10x better relative to existing options in removing friction in a given use- case. At the present juncture, cross- border payments appear to be that space. -India is the largest in- bound remittance market. Yet, costs of remittance are ~ 600 basis points & change. The UN SD Goal is to bring them down to ~ 300 basis points. RBI might want to double down on experimenting around this use- case. { Side - bar: Project Dunbar that is testing for settlement of multiple CBDCs is an experiment worth tracking. Look it up}. -There are a few other use- cases available to be explored. I will revisit this policy issue again sometime, look forward to riffing on those at the time. I gotta book for now. INR: We just published a report assessing the near-term and longer-term market and macro implications of India's 2024 General Elections (see report attached and link below). Overall, we think markets should view the outcome of India's General Elections positively over time as long as BJP wins a majority of seats in the Lok Sabha (>272 seats). This seems highly likely based on existing opinion polls. There are many shades of grey of course, and there could be some small knee-jerk weakness in INR and risk assets in the event that BJP loses some seats but still maintains a majority, weakness which we think should fade over time. The tail risk or "black swan" would certainly be a weak coalition government and/or a change in government. In these scenarios, we think INR sells off by 1-3%, India rates grind higher, and India equities fall sharply. History suggests that the market impact is dependent not just on the strength of mandate, but also the mandate relative to polling expectations, which are exceedingly high right now for a BJP win. We think it's also important to emphasise the longer-term dynamics of India's structural prospects. There are good things going for India that are independent of the government of the day, including good demographics, an educated population, a large domestic market, cumulative impact of past reforms, coupled with global push factors such as supply chain diversification. This is not to say that policy shifts post General Elections will not have an impact - they will - but it's certainly to say that we should not swing too far in either direction in longer-term assessments. https://lnkd.in/gTKYci-R

India is in the midst of a crucial election. There is a tug of war going on between the FIIs and domestic investors where a large amount of FII selling is being absorbed by domestic flows. Market abhors uncertainty and therefore this is some nervousness. Clearly, domestic investors are keeping faith that the policy continuity will be maintained and therefore markets keep rising the wall of worry. Indian market today has hit the coveted 5 TLN USD mark for the first time! But there are all kinds of opinions around who is winning the elections and psephologists are in great demand. The wait is not long as results will be out within a fortnight. Amidst all this cacophony, a young investor who started investing in the post covid period and has tasted success in markets without facing a downcycle whispers a prayer for this golden period to continue. He has grown in confidence thanks to a solid bull market yet he understands that his near term fortunes are tied to this election outcome. He doesn't want to loose whatever handsome gains he has made. I have adapted a new famous song called "Beautiful things" from a very talented young artist Benson Boone to express the existing feelings of a young Indian investor...
