Traditional one-way power flow on distribution lines is changing due to the rise of solar power. This creates a hazard for lineworkers who may encounter unexpected backfeed from solar installations during storm restoration efforts. This article explores how solar backfeed works and how to protect yourself from it. You might know that generation forecasts for new load from data centers (AI), hydrogen production, onshore semiconductors, batteries, and pharmaceutical factories have impacted Integrated Resource Plans for many utilities. In fact, northern Virginia is in a quandary with new generation required to support demand growing by 20GW over the next ten years - and has no way to solve it other than building new fossil fuel generation (https://lnkd.in/gPkvp6CV). DOE proposes ten “national interest” transmission corridors (my latest for PV Magazine USA) Eight of the ten transmission corridors proposed by the U.S. Department of Energy would facilitate transmission between grid regions; one would expand transmission within the Mid-Atlantic’s #PJM grid region; and one would expand transmission in the Northern Plains.
