Did you know that President Lincoln was NOT the keynote speaker on the Gettysburg battlefield on November 19, 1863? Do you know who was the featured speaker? Do you know why he is lost in history while Lincoln's speech became the iconic Gettysburg Address? Do you know why Lincoln's message was so successful and how you can use the same clear and concise story framework in your communications? In the PNW (+everywhere!), so many small creative agencies are struggling right now. I've heard this countless times these past few months from so many small creative agency owners. Small agencies don't live and die by search consultants. They live and thrive by the relationships they have with people at those Fortune 1000 companies that are in charge of the "below the line" work, not just Super Bowl ads and global media buys. Nike, adidas, Intel, Amazon, HP, etc have been the lifeblood for so many small creative agencies in the PNW as those companies are in our backyards. We have worked hard to build strong relationships that have turned into long term friendships as well. This last year has brought rounds and rounds of layoffs, reorgs, budget cuts/freezes, especially in marketing. So many clients and friends have been negatively impacted. This has had enormous ripple effects for all of the agencies whose business relied on those relationships and revenue. Many were caught a bit offguard as work was pulled, frozen, or long-term clients were just fired from their jobs. These small agencies do AMAZING work. The volume of work they do for these brands is not insignificant. There are so many are 6, 7, 8 figure agencies living quietly in the PNW who have thrived for years doing amazing creative work, employing so many creative folks, and being leaders in their communities. (thank you ThinkNW) I know we will get through this. I'm old enough to have been through a few versions of this - dot bomb in early 2000s, 2008 nightmare, blah blah blah. What I do know is that we can come out of this successfully. We just need to start doing some things differently. I love sharing my tips/tricks about navigating these waters. If I could be of help to you, let's chat. #cheerfulpersistency #agencylifeishardsometimes #stopthelayoffs

21 simple easy ways to be a stronger writer (And enjoy a larger social media presence): I shouldn't have shared #19... 1) Use white space 2) Remove excess adverbs 3) Avoid commas like the plague 4) Tease the benefit of your post in the hook 5) Use simpler words when possible 6) Write at a 5th grade reading level 7) Comment "BOOM" on this post 8) Don't repeat words or phrases... Unless it's intentional. Like for the use of "anaphora". An example of anaphora: Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech. 9) Vary the lengths of your sentences. One short. The next a little longer. The next... Short. 10) The best content is educational AND entertaining 11) Follow Mike Bolton 12) Share this with your network 13) Drink more cappuccinos 14) Read more 15) Apply what you learn from writing/copywriting books 16) Hand copy famous sales letters and content from your favorite writers This is where you physically write out (on paper) copy. It ingrains the style of the writer into your mind. 17) Stop using ChatGPT to write your posts... Use it for idea generation instead. 18) Use multimedia (photos, videos, etc.) to capture more attention on the timeline. 19) Use YouTube, TikTok and Instagram to study viral hooks. Repurpose them on LinkedIn. This is called "Industry Swiping". 20) Leave genuine comments on 5-10 *new* people's posts per day 21) Leave "Contributions" in your niche for added reach and authority P.s. - What's one more tip you have for the folks at home to be a stronger writer (and enjoy a larger social media presence)? Thanks for reading. Enjoyed this post? Follow Mike Bolton for more Share it with your network if you love writing and the rich, creamy taste of cappuccinos.

You don't need to be an expert copywriter to know the 4 C's. You just need to know the fundamentals. For instance, is your copywriting: 1. Clear 2. Concise 3. Compelling 4. Credible You can evaluate your email, website, FB ad, and landing page copy based on the 4 Cs. It gives you direction. It points you in the right direction. P.S. This example has everything in its above-the-fold landing page except credibility.

Fire any copywriter who can't echo your voice. That’s Copywriting 101. Capture the client's voice, their vibe, their essence. I spoke to a prospect recently—she's fed up. Frustrated because past copywriters miss her tone. Here's the real deal: A dope copywriter should be able to mimic your voice. If they can't, it's time to bounce. Writing in the client's voice? That's a must. It's not about the writer's swag; it's about yours. Every brand has its own vibe, its own personality. A pro copywriter should slide into your voice easy. Think of them as a voice actor, but for text. Here's our secret sauce for nailing a client's voice: -We ask you the RIGHT questions. -We go all in on your social media, getting your tone. -We jump in your world, seeing things your way. -We step inside your head to capture your essence. Because to keep it real ... If your copy doesn't sound like you, what's the point? You're not just looking for words on a page. You're looking for your essence, just spelled out. A top-notch copywriter gets you and your voice. They go deep and then they write. It's an art form—nailing the exact tone and vibe. Don't settle for a copywriter who can't hit the target. Your voice is your brand's signature. The lesson here is simple: Your voice is key. Make sure it's heard right.

Want to know a common scenario that plays out with some of my clients? Too. Much. Copy. They have an idea for an ebook, special report, or thought leadership article. We align with the creative brief. I do the research and conduct the interviews. The draft is sent and that's where everything changes. All of a sudden, there are (even) more cooks in the kitchen. And they all have ideas about what needs to be added. They try to shoehorn in every last value prop, benefit, and feature. The result: a copy-heavy piece of content or sales collateral that misses the mark and fails to get results. A better idea? Cut and cut again. https://lnkd.in/eGrtFk7v

Ever heard of Eugene Schwartz? If you're into copywriting, he's a legend. Here are a few of his tips that might make your life easier: Know Your Market - Pretty basic, but worth repeating. Get what your audience wants, what they worry about, and what excites them. Keep It Simple - Just talk like you would to a friend. No need for fancy words. Create Urgency - Give people a little push. Make them feel like they should act now. Benefits Over Features - Focus on how your product helps them, not just what it does. Test and Tweak - Your first try won’t be perfect. Keep experimenting until you find what works. Do you have any favorite tips or techniques from Eugene Schwartz? Let me know in the comments. #Copywriting #Marketing #EugeneSchwartz #Tips

- Rule of Dumb: a guide for abusing the rhetorical question - Dear reader, Ever seen a hack copywriter try to use rhetorical questions in their promotional message? Often, they'll shoehorn them into their intro like they're going out of style. Listen, a good rule of thumb is to use the rhetorical question sparingly so it doesn't lose its impact. Now, if you're under the impression that Papa Maverick would toss aside this rule of thumb, considering himself too adept, too brilliant, and too skillful to be constrained by such norms, well, then, you're absolutely right! Now, brace yourself as Papa Maverick unleashes a tsunami of rhetorical questions. Here we go. Do you know what happens to a guy whose pickup line falls flat? He goes home alone. Know what happens to a sales rep whose pitch doesn't hit the mark? He leaves without the deal. Know what happens to an employee whose request for a pay rise doesn't sit well with their boss? They leave without a pay rise. Know what happens to the screenwriter whose pitch doesn't gel with the producer? They leave without a movie. OK. The stupid obvious lesson here is this: A Pitch That Lands on Deaf Ears Will Always End in Tears! Ah, this is depressing, ain't it? Look, let's get to some positivity, shall we? Listen, we all know that to get the sale, your pitch must resonate with your audience. In other words, to get your prospects to open their wallets, you must first open their minds and hearts. But you're no fool, right? You know that's quite the task. Even when you know what you're doing it's tough going. Well, if you don't intimately know your market, and you don't know how to craft a pitch that deeply resonates with your audience, then I'd go so far as to say it's borderline impossible. Now listen: I am now going to lay before you an opportunity. An opportunity to get your hands on some of the best insider copywriting information you'll probably ever come across. Insider info on how to perform effective market research, craft a sales message that resonates so strongly with your audience that buying from you becomes the natural thing to do. I know that sounds like hyperbole. You can write this whole message off as hype... OR... you can grab this opportunity with both meat hooks, consume it, put what you learn into action, and observe what happens. I mean, that's what life is all about, isn't it? You either take risks or you leave them for someone else. Bottom line: If you're someone who is uh, what's the word I'm looking for? Ah, yes, a winner! Yes, if you're one of those, I invite you here: www.kelvindorsey.com Your friend, Kelvin Email Marketing Maverick

ATTENTION: Your "project completion" posts are soooo boring! Here's how to be more strategic (& creative) What's the point of a project completion post? For most companies, it's to showcase their work, publicly thank their client, and hopefully spark conversations that eventually lead to a new tender opportunity. But most project completion posts are useless! Clients want safe, smart, reliable, and professional contractors. So instead of saying, "We just finished XYZ project, aren't we amazing? Thanks to our very special client," use project completion posts as an opportunity to not only highlight your client but also to highlight: ✅ How your problem-solving skills saved money ✅ How your efficiency saved time ✅ How your unique approach simplified things ✅ How your QA process caught an issue early Now be honest, if a potential client of yours read a project completion post which touched on the points I mentioned above, how much more powerful would it be? The answer: 100% more powerful! Project completion posts are a prime opportunity to talk about the things clients truly value and how you handle them - don't waste that opportunity.
