The conversation had many takeaways and insights. Some of my favorites include: 📣 A good subject line can make or break whether a reporter actually reads a pitch. This means cutting the jargon and buzzwords. 👊 A mix of personalization and directness is essential in pitches. The more human the pitch is written, the better. 2024 has seen the continuation of a worrying trend. The news and media industry are in a state of flux.   With current business plans failing to bring sustainability and stability, media and publishers are adapting to changing patterns of distribution. As this article in Fast Company shows, globally recognized brands have been able to orchestrate a shift by growing digital subscriber bases and diversifying their non-news offerings. Still, there’s an uphill battle for smaller publishers.   Yet, all hope is not lost according to some experts who point towards the success of newsletters as just one example of new, evolving business models.   The importance of a healthy media industry cannot be overstated. Whether it’s investigative reports on government policy or coverage of local business, the news ensures organizations, institutions and individuals are more transparent, kept honest, and held to account.   #Media #News #Publishers

A recent Wall Street Journal article by Isabella Simonetti (gifted link below) reveals that TV networks are embracing their aging viewership and challenging the notion that younger demographics are the most valuable targets for advertisers. With the median age of viewers now in their 50s and 60s (MTV viewers average 51 years old!) for many networks, executives argue that reaching consumers based on their purchasing habits, rather than age, is the key to effective advertising. Older viewers often have more disposable income, are less sensitive to price increases, and are still making brand decisions. By focusing on the mass-market reach of TV and targeting people likely to buy a product, regardless of age, media buyers are adapting to the changing landscape of television viewership. As media and entertainment professionals, it's crucial to recognize the importance of this demographic shift and adapt our approaches accordingly. If you're a #founder who is annoyed you're not getting #PR, and are spending a monthly retainer on an agency but not feeding them with content, data, and newsworthy storylines, then it's your fault. Not theirs. You don't just snap your fingers and get news. You don't just pay an agency and get news. You invest the time and thoughtfulness into crafting meaningful, informative and timely narratives, in order to get news.
