  • EFFECT OF OXYGEN ON THE FORMATION OF SYNGAS CONTAMINANTS DURING THERMOCHEMICAL CONVERSION OF BIOMASS

    The effect of oxygen on the formation of syngas contaminants during thermochemical conversion of biomass has been studied using a pilot thermochemical plant that employs an integration of slow pyrolysis and steam reforming processes. It is proposed that the thermal oxidation of hydrocarbon gases, during the thermochemical process is a primary chemical mechanism for the formation of high molecular weight oxygenated hydrocarbons and polymeric materials, which are commonly referred to as tars.

This project was funded by DOE/NETL.
