Rafi’s lectures are sprinkled with humor, yet convey a direct and clear message to his students. His lectures are capable of captivating the attention of an entire classroom full of students, yet individualized enough to cater to the specific needs of each student in his class. With over 10 years of playing and 7 years of coaching experience under his belt, today Rafi still continues to share his love for the game with up-and-coming young chess enthusiasts from all across the city. Most recently, he has developed a 10-week chess leadership program which teaches students about leadership, entrepreneurship, and psychology using the game of chess as the primary platform. The aim of this program is to not only provide students with a comprehensive chess education, but also educate them on how to translate these skills learned through chess into other domains.

  • The Impact of Mood on Distractibility while Multitasking

Mood has been shown to influence attention. Positive moods are associated with increased distractibility due to a wider field of view (FOV) and a preference for global processing. Mood has been shown to influence attention. Positive moods are associated with increased distractibility due to a wider field of view (FOV) and a preference for global processing. However, it is not yet established how mood affects distractibility when performing multiple tasks simultaneously (multitasking). In the present experiment, participants initially multitasked at a baseline phase. Next, they were randomly assigned to watch a positive, neutral, or negative video clip. After the mood induction, participants continued to multitask for two additional phases. Distractibility was measured as the proportion of times participants interrupted one task to attend to another. Contrary to our hypothesis, individuals in the positive video condition appeared to be less distractible compared to those in the neutral or negative condition. Additionally, the positive video condition was also associated with higher multitasking performance. Overall, mood research on attention in single task performance may not translate to multitasking.
