Late-career professionals: Are you making these common interview mistakes?
I agree with tips by the others regarding your resume and email address: limiting amount of experience, removing graduation and birth years from your resume and email. I also recommend changing your email to a gmail.com address, a newer provider, or your own domain, i.e., @YourLastName. Com. Using providers like aol.com, yahoo.com, and cable internet providers can show your age and won’t show your ability to use newer technology tools. Consider resume template kits on Etsy or other marketplace for a professional and on-trend stylized resume commonly done by junior to mid-career candidates. Select a style representative of the job you are seeking. Bright colors and swanky formatting is good for Marketing, but not for engineers.

You’ve made a new contact after an interview. How can you make sure they remember you?
I agree with these actions for follow-up after an interview. I believe in doing all of these steps. If you’re hired soon after the interview you won’t make it through all the steps which is great! If the process is lengthy or you’re not selected, you’ll have the time and continue to stay in touch. I’ve had candidates who’ve been successful at this and they’re the first ones I think of when that position becomes available again, or another suitable position opens. There are some candidates I have actually created a professional friendship with through their follow-up post-interview. Several candidates I’ve hired a year to multiple years after interviewing. This is why networking, and even more importantly, connection is so important.

You just experienced a professional failure. How can you turn it into a learning opportunity?
While an imperative, part of the process is taking ownership of the mistake and openly communicating with the stakeholders and/or your team, it’s crucial to provide the same level of understanding to yourself, as you would a colleague. Many of us tend to perseverate on our mistakes and go beyond holding ourselves accountable to beating ourselves up. Give yourself the same grace you would another, which will make it easier for you to move through the remainder of the process without hanging onto the guilt. you will remember the lesson, you just don’t need the additional grief we often place on ourselves.
