How can you choose between active and passive voice in your writing?
In Star Trek VI, the Klingon prosecutor played a damning recording at Capt. Kirk's trial. Klingon: "Did you speak those words?!" Kirk: "Those words... were spoken... by me." I always thought that this showed how the passive-voice could be used to somewhat distance oneself from accountability. Any way you cut it, though, it comes off as kind of weaselly.

You want to create a successful media relations strategy. What are the key components?
Like anything else, nurturing media relationships requires constant attention. The biggest mistake companies make is that they think that they can get away with approaching the media _only_ when they want them to cover an announcement. As Sam Whitmore once observed, this is like only talking to the neighbor when you want to borrow their truck. A lot of companies, especially startups, unnecessarily despond when the media shows little interest in their announcement. There could be a lot of reasons for this but one solution is actually engaging with reporters and their material as part of the day-to-day routine.

What are the most effective strategies for distributing your press release to the media?
The biggest question is whether or if a press release is the best -- or even a good -- instrument to use. Of all the tools in the communications toolbox, this is the one most fetishized by executives outside of the communications department. They'll often demand it, sometimes over the counsel of their own communications team. It's an enticing idea, really: Pay a few hundred bucks and your announcement is scraped-and-loaded onto CNBC.Com, Yahoo Finance, and more. Then there are the specious claims about how it boosts SEO. Or the notion that the NYT newsroom is madly scraping press release wires looking for something to cover. Releases have their use cases. I advise business leaders: your comms team might have better ideas.

What are the best ways to predict influencer performance using past data?
There are a lot of hard-metric ideas here, which is well-and-good. Necessary. Vital. But there are two soft-metric reasons why I have rejected influencers when they have solicited me or when I've researched them: 1) They don't disclose that they are in a paid relationship -- Unless the influencer offers a big publicity win for a regulator (e.g., a Kardashian), they don't have the legal exposure that the sponsoring brand does. Brand gets fined. Influencer skates. 2) They have posted material that shows they do not believe in my product/service/category -- I know of an influencer who took money from a diet snack food brand. Folks pointed out that he previously railed against artificial sweeteners, which the brand used.

It’s a Good Policy to Have Social Media Rules in Writing
The New York Times
"In any given organization, only a handful of employees wake up in the morning and say 'I really, really care about the online reputation of this company, and it is a key aspect in guiding my online behavior and offering guidance to others.' Any good online behavior policy absolutely must appeal to the self-interest of the employee and the online reputations that we all carry around with us from job to job. This is how you start to navigate the myriad issues around what I call the “perso-professional” online identity."
