Christine Deputy the former CPO at Pinterest shared one of the most unique approaches to high-potential leadership development I’ve heard: -> The CNEXT Accelerator program. 👇 Here’s a snippet of our conversation 👇 Me: Can you explain how your high-potential development program works? Christine: We partnered with many Fortune 100+ companies to build CNEXT. It allows our employees and leaders to gain exposure to leaders from different industries. Me: Why not just build something in-house? Deputy: If you're developing people within your organization, they’re limited to certain exposures—your industry, your capabilities, and your approach to development. Me: So this program broadens exposure? Deputy: Exactly. When you expose people to other industries and give them a space to network with folks who face different challenges, it gives them a chance to grow and develop in an accelerated manner. Me: How do you loop in your participants’ managers if it’s not in-house? Deputy: Senior leaders like me, who have team leaders in CNEXT, get coaching around the same subjects. That way we can have conversations with our team leaders and partner with them throughout CNEXT and beyond. *** It’s a brilliant approach: 1. Collaboration, not competition, improves the program exponentially. 2. Parallel learning by senior leaders then reinforces learning in an ongoing, practical way. I'm loving Elisa Camahort Page's latest for Optionality, in which she riffs on a recent conversation with Libby Rodney of The Harris Poll about the shifting attitudes among the generations still at work. You know what? The most senior in the workforce and the most junior are not so different. "We’ve learned our lesson about putting all our eggs in one employment basket. We’ve learned our lesson about sacrificing personal needs for professional ones. We’ve learned how much we crave meaning and purpose. So we want more options, more irons in the fire, more diversified revenue streams, more interests and pursuits. Some or all of the above. Whether any one of us is pursuing an optionality-driven path at any given moment, Jory and I believe that most of us who are seasoned in the workforce are, at least, optionality-curious. But The Harris Poll data reminds me that it’s not just us. Those who are newest to the workforce, the Young Millennials and Elder Gen Zs, have already observed what it may have taken me and my cohort a decade or two to realize." I posted a poll last week about preferred types of #communication, if hypothetically you could only choose one. It’s fascinating to see the split is almost exactly even between the introverted methods and the extroverted methods of communication. (Or instant versus potentially time-delayed.) Introverted communications methods: IM (online chat of some variety) and Email = 51%. Extroverted communications methods: In-person conversation or phone call = 49%. Interesting! 💡 I’m usually an instant message / direct message kind of gal. I like the immediacy of being able to ask things in both short form and real time, but also like not putting a *demand* on the other person to respond immediately. It feels more urgent than an email but also more appropriate for quick thoughts or real-time back-and-forth. But maybe that’s just the introvert in me. 🫠 Are you surprised by these results? #communications

Where did tech talent relocate in the wake of the pandemic? I helped crunch the numbers using our in-house Beacon AI system to generate our annual SignalFire State Of Talent report. Here are some of the most interesting revelations: 1. NYC is the top destination in for tech workers relocating in the past year. SF remains top though for tech talent overall, with a large lead that’s unthreatened by recent gains by other cities. Meanwhile, Austin is on the rise with the biggest percentage growth of its tech headcount. 2. Gen Zs are both slower to ascend to managerial positions and more likely to switch jobs in the early years of their career than either Millenials or Gen X were. 3. Data roles have an increasing engineering focus, with Data Engineering and ML Engineer titles increasingly usurping Data Scientist ones. All this and more inside. What would you do if you knew you were going to be laid off? This is the topic that Jenny Kleintop spoke about yesterday as part of the incredible Women in Tech Global Conference 2024. Jenny did what too few of us do -- she heeded the warning signs. And then, she made the conscious decision to stay in her role for as long as she could in order to fight for the things that mattered to her. What did she fight for? 🎯 Her team- she pushed her team to be more visible to leadership and to be more confident in their abilities. 🎯 Her future self - she prioritized self care - eating better, sleeping better, exercising 🎯 Equality - she advocated for her team to get the promotions and pay raises that they deserved and fought against some of the lopsided compensation situations that existed. My biggest takeaways from Jenny's talk? 📌 Pay attention to the warning signs at work that a layoff might be coming. A big one is constant emphasis on cash flow and slashing expenses. 📌 We are more than a line item on a spreadsheet. 📌 Disconnect your personal identity from your work identity 📌 You can be a top performer and still be let go. 📌 If it does happen to you - you will be okay. You will thrive again. 📌 Use your influence to pull people up behind you. 📌 Build a network of people around you - they will carry you through. Thank you Jenny, for an inspiring talk that touched on so many truths. We are more than a dollar amount on a spreadsheet, and we are more than the place that we work. Our true value is the impact that we make on others.

#womenwednesday The “She’s not Strategic Syndrome” Early in my career, I used to interview a lot of product marketing candidates and I’d always get the operational interview role. My male counterpart would get analysis. Women are shouldering too much at work and often overlooked for their strategic abilities and contributions. I see over and over again examples where a male leader got to do the “strategic” work while a very hard working female report is shouldering all the work preventing her from having the space to be in the clouds. What can we do about it? 💡Uplevel presentations and executive meetings 📈 Make your contributions know 🦹‍♀️Don’t let it define you, calling someone not strategic is a throw away statement. When I begin working with a new boss, colleague, or employee, I take the first few weeks to get to know them–I focus on identifying their strengths from which I can learn. It's important to disregard hierarchy (I have recently sat through so many panels and presentations where folks interviewed Gen Z or Gen Alpha to gain insights into their preferences and dislikes...we learn from everyone!) and instead focus on the learning opportunities each person offers. This approach allows me to continuously broaden my knowledge and skills, propelling my career forward. #careertips #growth #knowledge

Artificial Intelligence is a technological advancement that demands our attention and scrutiny. In 2024, we have access to experts in AI who are women of color and people of color. It's imperative that we keep both eyes open for biases in AI, and I'm grateful to have at least half a dozen first-degree connections on LinkedIn who are working tirelessly to ensure that AI is fair and equitable. Farewell CIENCE, Hello New Horizons: The Art of the Pivot Today, I’m publicly closing a remarkable chapter: After 7 years of building, growing, and innovating at CIENCE, I'm stepping away from my role as FT CMO. This isn't a goodbye, but rather a pivot – a chance to explore new frontiers and apply my marketing expertise in fresh and exciting ways. My time at CIENCE has been filled with some enormous highs. To begin, I’ve had the privilege to work alongside >2,500 brilliant CIENtists across a dozen different countries through my time at the company. Probably too many to call out individually here on Linkedin (lest I bore the sh*t out of readers lol?!?!). At any rate, you are collaborators in our grand experiment proving that building a predictable pipeline isn’t art; it’s CIENCE. I trust you will continue the legacy we’ve built together. Together, we've achieved remarkable things, including:  * Executing a rare quadruple/triple/triple/double growth rates over 4 years.  * Growing site traffic from 0 to over 325K unique visitors per month (>2M/yr).  *Or delivering an industry-leading cacophony of voices elevating us to the most reviewed lead generation company in the USA. Beyond results—they were reflections of our strategies, informed by a holistic approach to marketing (esp. SEO, content, and deeply human insights). Yet, as the craftsman I see myself as (marketing is a craft!), I'm always seeking new challenges, new materials to mold, new forms to create. The marketing landscape is constantly evolving, and I'm eager to dive into its uncharted territories. This move is partly a leap into the unknown, but also a calculated step based on my core strengths: - Innovation & Tech: Embracing Gen AI. Engaging teams to adapt to new technologies as a cheerleader, prompt engineer, and key PMM for our software tools has been an exhilarating journey. - Business / Sales Development: My experience in building and scaling sales pipelines will be instrumental in forging new partnerships and driving growth. Designing, optimizing, and executing campaigns that set 100K+ Target Customer Meetings is kinda my sweet spot. - Customer Acquisition: I've spent years honing my ability to identify, attract, and convert over 3K of the right customers. This skillset will be invaluable as I navigate new ventures. - Target Segmentation: Nailing your audience is the cornerstone of effective marketing. We did this + achieved best-in-class CR%'s for years. - Analytics + Insights: Data is the lifeblood of marketing and we ran a tight ship. As I embark on this new chapter, I remain a CIENCE shareholder, deeply invested in the company's continued success. The relationships I've built will always be cherished. 🌏 📊 Erica Kangas is an engineering leader, voracious learner, and feminist builder who seeks out the biggest levers to move the world. 📊🌏 It's W6 / Q2 / 2024 and this week in our MGMT Boston up & coming operator series we’ve got Annie Erica, part of a small but mighty team as the Head of Engineering at hyper curated investment connection & fundraising guidance platform Scroobious. Erica joined Scroobious as their Head of Engineering to help lead the technical efforts of this very early stage team shaping up capital markets culture for underrepresented founders. Erica is responsible for the entirety of their technical infrastructure. She is working every day to build out their marketplace product, making sure Scroobious Founders are having a smooth experience so they can effectively onboard their pitches onto the marketplace and connect with investors. Erica continues to spend time answering tough questions about the business and communicating effectively to equip founders with the resources they need to be successful. Scroobious’ founder community grew 75% in 2023 and is made up of 63% female founders. ✍ Cataloging Skills & Connecting the Dots 🔄 From nonprofits to startups, Erica has always cataloged her experiences. She keeps references & resources on hand from prior experiences to keep memorable frameworks from the earliest days of her career. Every time she embarks on a meaty project, the first question she asks is “what are our goals”? Then, what are we looking to accomplish? By having something to ground herself in, she can begin to move forward. That work has paid off in building a portfolio of experiences and an archive of resources. At Scroobious, she wants to understand the different attributes of founders and successful pitches to effectively connect founders with angels. For example, investors look for coachability as an attribute & trait, so she has thought back to her nonprofit days when they measured grit and growth in students and volunteers. It’s obviously a bit different but there are always overlapping threads to pull on. Problems Not Yet Solved Erica offered up three unsolved problems that drive her work as an invitation to think about and join in tackling these issues. Because learning never ends and we have a lot more to do in these areas! 🤖 How do we build AI that won’t just repeat the mistakes and mirror the worst facets of our past? 🤝 How do we continue to develop the field of software engineering such that it is sustainable, equitable, and accessible? 🤲 How do we effectively combat exclusionary systems when many of our institutions no longer have the appetite or have their hands tied from doing so? This is a must read for anyone who believes a more connected world will be better for all of us. And according to Putnam, we are at a crisis of disconnection. Unfortunately, he doesn't offer too many solutions so I'm hoping this platform can chime in with some ideas. "And the third variable that we look at is harder to discuss and measure, but it’s sort of culture. To what extent do we think that we’re all in this together, or it’s every man for himself, or every man or woman? And that has exactly the same trend. What caused that? I am trying to get to the issues of causation because it turns out to be morality, according to my reading of this evidence. What stands upstream of all these other trends is morality, a sense that we’re all in this together and that we have obligations to other people. Now, suddenly, I’m no longer the social scientist, I’m a preacher. I’m trying to say, we’re not going to fix polarization, inequality, social isolation until, first of all, we start feeling we have an obligation to care for other people. And that’s not easy, so don’t ask me how to do that."
