Abt Global evaluated The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Oncology Care Model's (OCM) effectiveness in reducing care costs while maintaining quality. To examine OCM's impact on #HealthEquity, we assessed four historically underserved populations: Black and Hispanic patients, those with dual eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid, and residents of resource-poor neighborhoods. Our findings showed that, before OCM, these groups had higher acute-care use and episode payments, but were less likely to receive timely chemotherapy after surgery, adhere to oral treatments, or receive hospice care. While OCM improved oral treatment adherence for all groups, care quality was not consistently improved and only the treatment of Hispanic patients showed reduced payment costs. Technology enabled, remote, clinical trial services can significantly improve clinical trial access. Such, decententralised, trial procedures are an important way to improve representation on trials and enhance the quality of data obtained while reducing participant burden. Oncology studies are no different. It's great to see sponsors and sites look to apply learnings and enable these tools to redifine who can participate in cancer clinical trials. It’s undeniable that the current health disparities at the local levels are increasing, and more individuals are falling through the cracks. Now, more than ever, we must harness innovation and collaboration to address these health disparities and improve equitable access to care for everyone. In my recent interview with Michael Gibney from PharmaVoice, we explored how AI is becoming a game-changer in tackling health disparities in cancer care. From pioneering screening initiatives to data-driven insights, the opportunities in leveraging AI to bridge the gap in health outcomes is endless. Innovation isn't just about developing ground-breaking treatments; it's about making sure those breakthroughs reach all populations who needs them. Everyone, regardless of their ZIP code, deserves access to cutting-edge cancer treatments. AI presents a tremendous opportunity to address these disparities head-on. Collaborating with diagnostic companies and AI innovators, we're using data to expose the disparities in care and address screening and access issues head-on. Our goal is steadfast: to leave no one behind in the battle against cancer. To reduce the cancer burden on a population scale, we must prevent cancer.” - Timothy Rebbeck Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Despite many advances in treatments and survival rates, cancer diagnoses continue to rise, even overtaking CV as leading cause of death in some parts of the world. With the healthcare system already fragmented and short of resources, it doesn't seem that #cancer care can effectively reach everyone who needs it without technology, and disruption to the underlying model of therapy development and delivery. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Oncology Care Model (OCM) was a six-year voluntary initiative to improve cancer care delivery, patient experiences, and reduce costs. Most interviewees reported positive care experiences, effective communication, and high-quality care from caregivers, mirroring patient survey responses. • Over half of the patients wanted active participation in treatment decisions whereas nearly one-third preferred to trust their physicians entirely, emphasizing the need for oncologists to acknowledge varied patient preferences. • Rural or small-town patients faced challenges accessing care, often needing to travel for treatments and relying on local providers with fewer choices. Patients' living situations impacted their treatment experiences, affecting transportation and decision-making, underscoring the need for tailored care. • Mental health support was identified as the greatest challenge, with patients indicating a need for better emotional care, such as addressing anxiety and depression, despite OCM’s requirements for depression screening. These findings highlight the importance of personalized, accessible, and holistic cancer care. #HealthEquity #PatientExperience #CancerTreatment #MentalHealth

Clinical trials need to be representative if we expect the results to be applicable to ALL cancer patients. Let's double down to help address this imperative by carefully designing trials that optimize patient access. Let's all commit to taking a data-driven approach to defining eligibility criteria, and reducing site burden by focusing data collection on only those elements absolutely critical to study objectives!
