Augmenting Your CDI Program for Risk Adjustment

Most of today’s CDI programs are focused completely on ensuring that MS-DRGs are accurate and that all standard and major complications and comorbidities (CCs and MCCs) are supported in the clinical documentation as basis for their queries. As such, they are not focused on other secondary diagnoses, which may have a significant impact on risk adjustment for a patient who may be indexed to one of the value-based or alternative payment models for future payment adjustment.

Worked with a group of national OP CDI SME’s under the direction of a national trade association to develop a micro-credential for certifying novice CDI staff of meeting entry to practice competency in HCC risk adjustment reporting.

Designed nouveau OP CDI workflow and immersive provider coaching program, incorporating HCC capture and precision documentation concepts for 8 ACO’s as part of a for-profit IDN with a national footprint. Assisted in identifying remediation priorities in Athena and Epic EHR. Assisted in developing monetization method for prospective traceability of impact for MSSP.
