Nominated to the position of Commodore (a volunteer leadership role) and elected as the 69th Commodore of the club in November 2018 for a 1 year term . Re-Elected for 2nd Term beginning 1/1/2020.
As a member of the club's Executive Board, The Commodore is the Chief Executive Officer of the club responsible for providing leadership and direction to the executive board and board of directors as chair. The Commodore is responsible for commanding the club’s fleets, enforcement of the rules and general provisions and welfare of the club. He is an ex officio member of all the club’s committees. Along with the secretary he/she is the chief signatory of all contracts and obligations of the club.

Competitors come to Chicago from around the world to participate each July.‘The Mac’ starts at the Chicago Lighthouse, just off Navy Pier and continues to Mackinac Island. Competing boats cross the finish line between the lighthouse on Round Island and a fixed mark on Mackinac Island. The year round planning process is lead by…
The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac: At 333 miles (289.4 nautical miles), the Race to Mackinac is the longest running annual freshwater distance race in the world. Competitors come to Chicago from around the world to participate each July.‘The Mac’ starts at the Chicago Lighthouse, just off Navy Pier and continues to Mackinac Island. Competing boats cross the finish line between the lighthouse on Round Island and a fixed mark on Mackinac Island. The year round planning process is lead by the chairman of the committee who is appointed by the Flag Officers of Chicago Yacht Club (Executive Board).
I had the honor of serving as the 20th Chairman of the Race to Mackinac- presiding over the 104th and 105th running of the "Mac".
Responsibilities: Volunteer Management, planning, public relations, race administration and marketing of the race. Established committee structure into key operations groups that drive the race: Marketing /Merchandising; Technology & E-Infrastructure; Administration; Race Management; Safety & Measurement; Finance, Sponsorship and Governmental relations.
Milestones:
Worked with US Sailing to set direction and strategy on the aftermath of the 103rd running. Established risk management parameters and refocused participants attention to safety and precautionary measures for an on the water distance race like the 'Mac'.
Refocused and modernized marketing and branding of the race to provide a consistent theme that worked within the culture of the event. Pioneered the digital marketing of the event as committee member and expanded during my time leading the event. Directed media engagement to educate lay and marine industry media on changes and improvements to the Race to Mackinac. Directed the PR strategy for the event to grow the prestige for the race and the club.
