Are you a Mechanical Engineer interested in diving into Machine Learning and applying it to CAE problems? I understand that the amount of information available online might seem overwhelming, and you may be unsure of where to even begin. I felt the same way six years ago. I can only suggest doing what I did back then: 1. Start by learning the basics of Python (~20-50 hours). 2. Then, delve into the fundamentals of Machine Learning (~20-100 hours). 3. Select an engineering problem to tackle. Don't worry if you feel like you lack the skills to solve it. 4. Attempt to solve it using any means possible. Use Google, ask ChatGPT, consult with friends, watch videos, adapt code from Stack Overflow. You are learning and IT'S OK to not know stuff. You will get better. 5. (I wish I had done more of this) Document your progress. Whether it's through writing a blog, creating a GitHub repository, recording videos, or posting on LinkedIn, this is important for several reasons: you'll receive feedback from the community, learn how to work in a structured way, and demonstrate to potential employers your passion for your work, if that's your goal. And if you're struggling with the initial step, I've prepared a roadmap for you. Cover the blue sections, and you'll be ready to progress to the basics of ML, picking up the rest along the way.

Engineering life hack: Too chilly in your cube? Turn your tower around so the CPU fan is blowing toward you and fire up a complex FEA model. This might also work for keeping coffee warm, but I’ll have to run the CFD/Thermal Analysis to be sure.

Ever tried to design parts from a 3D scan? Either work with super heavy stl conversion or spend a lot of time create a clean model. My last assignment as a PolyU IC employee! My former bosses asked me to design a few "advanced" MatLab sessions, one of which involved simulation via ODEs (ordinary differential equations). I decided to use ballistics as an example. I mean, who wouldn't want to hit a cocky engineering instructor with a supersonic (hypersonic?) projectile from dozens of kilometers away? The simulation animation shown here (Python version) includes the effect of Newtonian air resistance, so the trajectory is not quite parabolic (as you were taught in high school physics). In fact, ballistics with air resistance doesn't have a solution in a closed form, i.e. you can't search for a general formula online. (Take that ChatGPT!!) You need to run the simulation each time you wish to hit a new target, although in practice we usually compile all possible firing solutions into a table. As a bonus, I even threw in the principle of time on target. For the same muzzle velocity, you can (usually) land 2 rounds on the same target simultaneously by timing the 2nd shot and adjusting its firing angle. Two for the price of one! Unfortunately, I was later told that PolyU policy won't allow teaching using applications in warfare. No big deal, I replaced the words artillery, shells, etc. with catapult, pumpkins, etc. based on the Punkin Chunkin competitions in the US. (I'm not kidding!) The problem is I totally forgot to change the parameters to more realistic values. So future PolyU students will learn about catapults launching pumpkins at Mach 3 to a distance of over 20 km. Have you once ate, slept and breathed DSP? If you are answering YES, just making sure you do not miss this talk by Ford Professor of Engineering Al Oppenheim at MIT. Watched the YouTube, brought back memories of Stanford Telecom, Zoran, etc. hardwired DSP, the TMS320*, DSP56k, ADSP, etc. programmable DSP, to who would have thought possible: micro-/nano-power mixed-signal DSP, and configurable DSP building blocks, and mighty ones to the GHz realm. For me, DSP started with a book by Oppenheim, thrown into messing with fully-custom DSP for GPS baseband processing, learning how to get a NCO done so the noise doesn’t not mess up the 1ppm oscillation. Learning by doing - sweats but fun. #dsp #stem

This is beautiful. I've been wanting this combination of locomotion for a long time (Actually, since I was introduced to Tachikomas from Ghost in the Shell). This has much promise as it truly leverages the benefits of wheels (speed) with the stepping ability of legs. High impact simulations often involve extreme loading conditions that can exceed the material strength. Some #FEA programs allow users to define specific criteria for element deletion based on strain, stress or energy. But is it OK if anything like that happens? 😮 From solver point of view, element deletion is required to maintain numerical stability & level of accuracy. To achieve this, mesh elements get deleted due to 3 possible reasons: 👉 When elements become highly distorted or tangled, they are automatically deleted by the software to prevent instability. 👉 When elements representing contact regions undergo separation due to high velocities, they get deleted to simulate detachment between components. 👉 In high impact simulations, hourglassing occurs more frequently, leading to deletion of affected elements. Why do entry-level mechanical engineers struggle to design manufacturable parts? Because they've never been taught how to contact a manufacturer and ask questions about manufacturing. They've been taught how to analyze, optimize, and simulate. We need to encourage our young engineers that analysis and simulation is useful, but there's no need to overthink every problem. Reach out to a sheet metal vendor and ask if something can be formed easily. Don't try to make an Ansys model of the part to see if it will work. #manufacturing

Machinists and Engineers: I’ve been getting a lot of questions about my claims on datum shift. So, I’m reposting this with some provoking thoughts. I’m on a mission in something no one is talking about. Recently, my inbox has been flooded with comments from “GDT experts“ that datum shift and bonus tolerance have nothing to do with each other. However, they could never be more wrong. The physical act of a datum feature of size shifting does not include bonus tolerance, that is true. However, a datum shift check does! In fact, there is no such thing as bonus tolerance as most GDT educational material describes it. (Because of the size/position relationship) However, there is bonus tolerance to both size and position that is gained when you perform a datum shift check. As the datum feature of size varies in size and position, the other features referenced to it can shift up and down by the same amount (3D CAD proof available) If you just widen all of your feature size and position tolerance ranges, you can acount for the datum varying without having to use the modifier with the datum. That’s where the real bonus tolerance comes from! Its a true bonus tolerance created from the size/position relationship between separate features. Its connected into how the rule of reciprocity works (3D CAD proof available) This might be confusing to visualize. That’s why if you study the graph in the video long enough you will see much more than I described. There are many hidden insights that I didn’t describe, but are shown in the video. There are some nice Easter eggs that anyone who takes the time to study them will have their eyes open. For example: one of the insights one might see is how a non-zero position tolerance at MMC controls for a minimum amount of assembly slop. (3D CAD proofs available) Why is this important? It points engineers to how to better design and communicate their intent - which saves your company untold amounts of money! Another hidden insight is that a datum shift check controls for gaps around parts in an assembly if that’s important. (3D CAD proofs available) Being armed with these insights helps an engineer hit the ground running when designing for optimum performance at the lowest cost possible. Shaken, not stirred. I love CFD! (With autonomous meshing and advanced physical models, CONVERGE can efficiently and accurately simulate applications with moving geometries and complex physical phenomena, as demonstrated in this simulation of an oil jet-cooled piston. Volume of fluid modeling is used to capture the oil jet as it is sprayed toward the oil gallery inlet. The oil enters the gallery and sloshes around as the piston moves up and down. The oil then exits through the outlet hole on the opposite side of the gallery. Conjugate heat transfer modeling is used to predict the heat transfer between the piston and the oil, and you can observe the temperature contours changing as the heat dissipates.) #cfd #convergecfd
