Whilst its hard to see that any progress has been made, to the contrary - it looks like 0 progress made and everything got worse, with recent years breaking through the 1.5C targets. We mustn't give up hope that the many initiatives that have been kicked off as a result of these agreements, have prevented worse things from happening... too optimistic? maybe But working in the sustainability and SDG space has never been more exciting, with many people sharing that a just transition to a more sustainable, de-growth and circular economy is, ...possible. The questions is how fast, to prevent worse things from happening (Climate Catastrophy, Ecological Collapse, ...the list is getting longer). Currently the ANNUAL financing gap to the 2030 SDGs is (according to UN estimates), around $4 trillion. This is the same as Germany's or Japan's Gross Domestic Product. This is a staggering number and concept that the money missing to achieve the SDGs is the same as the monetary value of ALL finished goods and services made in Germany or Japan on an annual basis. And yet, the world economy is worth around $100 Trillion, so $4 trillion = 4%. That ...almost...sounds doable? too optimistic? maybe When it comes to asset managers, total discretionary assets under management (AUM) of the 500 biggest managers amounted to USD 113.7 trillion at the end of 2022, down by 13.7% from the end of 2021. The largest, BlackRock, manages $10 trillion and the next biggest 2, Vanguard ($9 trillion) and Fidelity ($4 trillion). Surely, investing into solutions on a planet that is actually liveable with resources being consumed at a sustainable pace is what its at? Otherwise, what will be managed in 20 or 30 years?

I saw this compelling post a few days ago and haven't stopped thinking about it! Mira mentions that the tactics below and others can support canvassers. Here are a few additional tactics from my perspective. What would you add? ⭐Have legal counsel on speed dial: Ensuring staff feel secure and supported is crucial. Notify your counsel of your canvassing programs. Share with your staff that employees who are arrested for legally performing their job responsibilities may be eligible for representation by your organization’s legal counsel. ⭐Community Resources: Prepare a list of local emergency personnel and non-law enforcement support in crisis situations. Keep a contact list of community resources such as diversion programs, mental health responders, alternatives for wellness checks, and other relevant hotlines if available in your location. ⭐Reporting: Have a reporting system for police and suspicious encounters and share high-level details of these reports with partners. As a collective, you may be able to identify and neutralize concerning trends. ⭐Infiltration: Train all staff on opposition leadership and social engineering tactics. Ensure staff know they can say they don’t know an answer and can get back to whomever is asking. ⭐Notifying the cops: It's crucial to respect and value the preferences of the communities we engage with. Ask your canvass leadership if notifying the cops ahead of the canvass launch aligns with the community's vibe. Sometimes, communities prefer not to engage with the police proactively, and we should listen to them. If your staff wants you to reach out to the police ahead of the canvass, don’t just call - send a written email acknowledging canvassing and the distribution of educational literature, which are fundamental rights protected by the U.S. Constitution. If a canvasser has to interact with the police, I agree with following up with the local precinct to reiterate this protected right. Share a senior-level leader’s contact information for any questions (as the Executive Director at Scale for Change, I’m the point of contact). ⭐Call turf ahead of time: Calling is cost-efficient and can help innoculate the community that your organization’s canvassers will be in their neighborhood. Bonus points: Your callers can eliminate doors they identify that don’t want to hear from your folks, making your knocks more efficient. ⭐Ask staff what they need: After an incident, such as when a canvasser is harassed in the community or by the police, it can ripple through the office. Make sure management makes space for the team to debrief and determine their needs. Really good podcast episode of Joan Garry with Jeremy Heimans, Chair of the movement building organization Purpose, in which he updates his assessment on how citizen activism has evolved in the last 5-10 years. Two important points that Jeremy makes (among others): 💡 A focus on sector-level developments, and building an ecosystem for civic activism, is needed, to overcome NGOs' tendencies to focus on their own organizational survival, competition, and outcomes. This is similar to what organizations like WINGS and other Philanthropy Support Organizations (PSOs) aim for in philanthropy. 💡 An important cautionary word: Heimans notes a tendency towards ideological purity in how we message to those who do not currently agree with our overall progressive worldviews -- if we want to get those people on board with our campaigns, we may have to message differently. I agree with this second point. Heimans references causes that focus on welcoming refugees in global North countries; I see the same messaging approach which he mentioned work well in my part of chronically economically depressed Upstate New York regarding how refugees have improved our economy and quality of life. Let the messenger and the message be people whom our audience already identifies with -- the message will resonate better in that case. Do give it a listen!

Tomorrow, the NYC Council Committee on Aging will hold it's budget hearing. People will go into the weeds on particular proposals and providers will advocate for support for their approaches to the work. But there's a fundamental math problem going on here. I call it Acturial Dissonance. In 2016, NYC Planning published New York City Population Projections by Age/Sex & Borough, 2010-2040. It concluded that the population of New Yorkers 65 years and over stood at 1,002,000 in 2010 and is projected to increase to 1,410,000 in 2040—a jump of 408,000 persons or 40.7 percent. The bulk of the increase was expected to occur in the first two decades of the projection period 2010-2030. How has the City prepared for this dramatic expansion of the 65+ population? It has not. The Department for the Aging budget, generally a little less than 1% of the total city budget, fell to less than one-half of one percent in 2023. And now we’re threatened with more cuts. Through another lens: In 2005 people over 65 represented 11.9% of New York City residents By 2015 it was 13.2%[1] In 2021 it was 16.2%[2] What are the ramifications of baby boomers aging in and living longer with no appropriate budget response from the City? ·     An affordable housing crisis ·     Food insecurity ·     The collapse of long term care No political rhetoric can mask the lunacy of the actuarial dissonance mayoral administrations practice when it comes to allocating budget to care for older New Yorkers.   How does this strategy make any sense? Center for Effective Philanthropy released its report today on State of Nonprofits 2024: What Funders Need to Know. Checkout the survey results from a nationally representative panel of U.S. nonprofits that receive at least some foundation funding. The data reveals: - 95 percent of leaders express some level of concern about burnout, and 34 percent report that staff burnout has been “very much” a concern to them in the last year.  - Almost 60 percent of nonprofit leaders identify staff-related concerns as one of their organization’s biggest challenges.
