🚀 Bridging the Digital Divide🌐 I came across this insightful article by Brad Randall from Broadband Communities on San Diego County’s initiative to expand broadband access to its unincorporated areas. It's a stark reminder of how we often overlook rural areas that are just a short drive from densely populated regions. It's fascinating to realize that while urban areas have robust internet services and many times are arguably overserved, many communities within a short commute remain severely underserved. This initiative, powered by $9 million in ARPA funds, aims to change that, but it requires input and collaboration from stakeholders to maximize its impact. As we push for digital equity, it’s crucial to remember our neighboring rural communities. Their connectivity is just as vital and deserving of our attention. I can't help but also think the the #BulkBan push from the #FCC doesn't help in the efforts to reach communities just out of reach but close enough to infrastructures where going Bulk or Bulk managed Wifi allows providers to reach what would normally be unreachable for multiple reasons, many of the reasons Dan Myers has pointed out / outlined in his recent posts (check them out of you missed them) Kudos to San Diego County for taking this significant step forward! View as Webpage   CPUC BEAD Challenge Process Timeline   California’s 120-day Challenge Process will begin on July 8, 2024, starting with the 30-day Challenge Phase. The CPUC has partnered with Ready.net to provide a Challenge Portal where permissible challengers can register and submit challenges. On June 17, the CPUC will provide the map of eligible locations, access to the BEAD Consumer Challenge website, and the data sets of unserved locations, underserved locations, and CAIs. These will be available on the Challenge Portal.  Pre-registration for the Challenge Portal is currently open to permissible challengers (units of local and Tribal governments, nonprofits, and broadband service providers). Registration will remain open through the Rebuttal Phase to allow challenged Service Providers to register and provide counterevidence to rebut challenged locations. For technical assistance with the Portal, please contact cahelpdesk@ready.net.  The CPUC will hold a series of office hours for live questions on the BEAD Challenge Process. Dates and times will be posted on the BEAD Events page for registration once available. There is a lot to take-in from the June 12, information-packed #BroadbandBreakfast discussion of #DigitalEquity and #SmartCities.  I have two primary reactions.  First, the panel is a must-see YouTube for any state/local government official charged making the case to Local, State or Federal funders about the need for funding to address broadband adoption and/or affordability efforts like #ACP.  The panel discussion is centered on the need for data-driven assessments of broadband adoption, affordability and availability in their community and is chock-a-block with resources, recommendations and best practices! My second reaction is to question how valuable the panel discussion is for state/local government officials charged with utilizing existing broadband resources to advance their community’s so-called “smart city” objectives.  Since “Smart City” was in the panel’s title, I was expecting the panel to include discussion of how well-tailored Smart City initiatives around delivering local government services online, eg, are helping to drive increased broadband adoption. While there is no doubt that more needs to be done to improve broadband adoption and availability, we--as champions of the positive impact of broadband and civic technology—should be able to recognize and encourage Smart City initiatives at the same time we advocate to address existing gaps in digital inclusion.  To my ears, the panel (lamentably) did not give equal time to the ways local government leaders are using Smart City initiatives to advance digital inclusion. Captioning Display Settings. A draft Third Report and Order (Order) that would require manufacturers of covered apparatus and multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) to make closed captioning display settings readily accessible to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.  2. NG911. A draft Report and Order would require wireline, commercial mobile radio service, covered text, interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and Internet-based Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) providers to transition to NG911 in two phases, with each phase including the delivery of 911 traffic (including location information) in the requested IP-based format to designated in-state NG911 delivery points following a 911 authority’s valid request.  3. Net Neutrality Rules Make No Sense in the Age of 5G Network Slicing An article in the Washington Post points out that the FCC's efforts to reprise Obama-era net neutrality rules doesn't take into account how the internet has changed in the last 15 years, with a growing number of internet-connected devices ranging from robot vacuums to entire factories. AT&T spokesman Alex Byers explained that 5G network slicing, which creates fast lanes for specialized apps, "is the technology that will help unlock the full potential of telemedicine, autonomous vehicles, automated manufacturing and virtual reality." https://lnkd.in/dpCggCAg
