An excellent article from my Symplicit colleague Sergio Colombetti outlining how easy it is for pixel perfect designs to look very different on the end user's device. While we often create digital designs in pixels, did you know the standards for minimum size we often reference are actually specified in units with a real-world physical size? WCAG use CSS Pixels (defined as a physical size of 0.265mm) and Apple standards are defined in points (1 point = 0.353mm). Check out his article for a great breakdown of how screen resolution impacts the way our physical fingers can accessibly interact with digital experiences.

In medical device development, Human Factors should be like a movie director, not a movie critic. Instead of being brought in to consult at the end, HF should be involved throughout a project, “directing” development at every stage. One of the many benefits of tackling design - prototyping - and small batch runs under one roof: test fitting and refining. Rather than just building to the print and print tolerances, we test fit each piece as it comes together, and refine the design and plan for manufacturing as we go. We use fit-up to develop our tolerances and determine critical vs non-critical tolerances- giving customers a complete, ready to manufacture package. Not every product needs a dark mode, but I still encounter scenarios where designing for use in a low-light environment would be beneficial. For some clients, a dark mode made perfect sense: 🔍 Radiologists switch between medical images and other tools, where dark mode reduces eye fatigue and helps maintain focus. 🎭 Tech crews working in dark theatres and dark mode ensure their screens don't disrupt others However, there were times when dark mode was unnecessary and driven more by personal preference: 💼 Finance users in brightly lit office environments Recently, during a late-night drive-thru visit for a caffeine boost, my eyes were overwhelmed by the brightly lit menu displays. It took several seconds for my eyes to adjust to read the menu and then another few seconds to readjust to the dark environment outside. A few changes to the design can eliminate a rather jarring experience. ☕ As companies update their drive-thru displays, it's an opportunity to consider a redesign that could improve the user experience in various lighting conditions throughout the day. 💡 Can you think of other improvements to the UX for the drive-thru experience? "Many AI tools are still quite cumbersome to use. It’s yet another tool in your technology stack. There was one AI-powered design platform that we tried to incorporate into our process. The setup process was laborious and its output was unpredictable, not saving us time or making our work better. However, change happens slowly, until it doesn’t. We saw it with the Internet, with digitalization, and with mobile. In William Gibson’s words, the future is here but it isn’t evenly distributed. Yet. AI, particularly generative AI, is now heading towards the Trough of Disillusionment in the hype cycle for marketers. In about 12 to 18 months, I predict, this will have changed."

Well done on this article, John Barnes and Timothy W. Simpson. Although clearly nobody is at a ~$30mm annual revenue per SLM NXG XII 600, the comparative unit economics are spot on. AM is finally gaining that most basic of industrial force multipliers--economies of scale. My only criticism would be with respect to the statement that, "the materials and services are where the majority of revenue is earned." An airframe is not valued by its weight in aluminum, nor is an aircraft engine valued by its weight in nickel. At least in our industry, it's all about the engineering on the front end, and the quality system on the backend. But unit economics allow for the commercial buy-in by the customer--and that's what's changed. Still there are many, many pitfalls out there for people who use the technology to design, build, and sell into specific markets, but (as you mention obliquely in the article) there's no chance we're opining on that topic.
