  • Microwave sensitivity maximization of disbond characterization in conductor backed dielectric composites

Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation (vol 12, issue 3, pp. 193-198)

    Abstract:
A swept frequency microwave nondestructive technique for detection of disbond in a dielectric composite backed by a conducting plate is discussed. The theoretical development is based on an incident plane wave illuminating such a medium, and then formulating the characteristics of the reflected wave. This way the effective reflection coefficient of the medium is found. The phase of this reflection coefficient changes in the presence of a disbonded medium. With the determination of…

With the determination of an optimally sensitive frequency range using the theoretical model and the known properties of the composite dielectric material, it is shown that disbonds on the order of a few microns can be accurately detected at relatively low microwave frequencies. Several experimental results are also presented.

  • Swept microwave frequency nondestructive detection and evaluation of delamination in stratified dielectric media

Journal of Wave-Material Interaction (vol 7, issue 1, pp. 1-12)

    Abstract:
A swept frequency microwave nondestructive technique for detection and evaluation of disbonding and delamination in layered-dielectric slabs backed by a conducting plate is discussed. The theoretical development is based on an incident plane wave illumination of such a medium, and then formulation of the characteristics of the reflected wave. An effective reflection coefficient is determined whose phase characteristics are used to detect and evaluate the characteristics of the…

An effective reflection coefficient is determined whose phase characteristics are used to detect and evaluate the characteristics of the delamination in the media. This phase variation as a function of the operating frequency is shown to be pseudo-periodic. Simple evaluation of the swept frequency periodicity is applied to infer information about the delamination thickness and other characteristics of the medium such as its dielectric properties. The description of an experimental apparatus is given which is used to verity the theoretical results.

As the only national association for rubber products companies, ARPM members range in size from small manufacturing producers to multi-billion dollar conglomerates. The Association for Rubber Products Manufacturers (ARPM) was established in October of 2010 after elastomer products company executives belonging to the RMA mutually agreed that a stand-alone association was needed.
