“I was operationally assigned with Jay twice: Once in Michigan and once in Panama. While in Panama, Jay was head of regional counter-narcotics for the Office of Naval Intelligence. We had the pleasure to operate around the canal and surrounding waters in go-fasts, tracking suspect smugglers as they traversed or visited Panama en route the U.S., Europe or Asia. In addition, Jay was responsible for providing training to the “new” Panamanian law enforcement community post-Noriega. To put it simply, Jay was the most operationally focused officer to which I had the pleasure to associate. He empathizes completely with those in the field. As I have watched him succeed in the civilian community, it is easy to see why he became such a successful CIO. He understands that finance, operations and sales are the true drivers of business, and that technology is the ultimate enabler. Jay’s organizing his areas of responsibility to mimic this doctrine allows him to relentlessly operate at a high level of positive urgency.”

Your data analysts and managers are at odds. How can you bring them together?
Let’s see what AI does with this. in every effort around data, there is some tie back to the business the bigger the tie, the bigger the focus should be. So those two humans need to align back to what’s the most important, and if they fail in that alignment, they should move it up the chain further.

How can you manage vendor relationships when working with vendors of different expertise levels?
Picking a vendor is like picking a person, and in fact you are picking multiple “persons”. Yes we ask is their product a good fit. But sometimes the best product doesn’t have people that fit, and the fifth down the list does. If you can combine real people fit with strategies between the firms that align over the next few years…and spend enough time in the process to develop trust across the board, “managing vendors” becomes more about “integrating partners”. Make sure expectations for both firms are super well mapped out. Strength to weakness and weakness to strength. No gaps. Pick right. Take your time. Once you pick, execute like crazy. A final thought…nothing goes perfectly. Who would you rather struggle imperfectly with?
