Little things you should do if you want an interview/job: - Reach out before interviews with a quick message to say you're excited to learn more about the role - Connect on LinkedIn (if you haven't already) - Send thank you and follow up notes within 24 hours And here's a new one... - Accept the calendar invite if you're sent one What % of candidates do you think I talk to that don't do any of the above? The number would astonish you. And that's not to say that every candidate who doesn't follow up is bad. But it's not a great look. Treat interviewing like a sales cycle. This is the progression from average to elite when it comes to resumes and interviewing 👇 Average Sales Reps: No numbers or awards on their resume. They just explain their responsibilities Good Sales Reps: Numbers and awards on their resume. They are clearly successful, but when it comes to interview time that can't explain why. Great Sales Reps: Numbers and awards on their resume, and can clearly articulate why they have been successful. ELITE Sales Reps: Numbers, awards, can articulate why they are successful and can teach other people how to also be successful in their job. There are some other factors of course, but at the end of the day this is the real stuff. Can you explain why you are good? A great rep can transform a territory. A great rep who can teach can transform a region and sometimes an entire company. So while you're out there dominating - pay attention and take note of why and how things went well. SDR managers should aim to build a team of leaders. Not followers. And it all starts with trust. One of the first things I told my team as a newly promoted SDR Manager was “I trust you.” Whether they were tenured or new, I trusted them to: - Experiment with different demand gen strategies - Share ideas and learn from others - Lead team training sessions - Execute on their plans - Ask for help Trust your reps and they’ll start to believe in themselves more. Be honest with why you need experience for your SDR/BDR role? You could be saving yourself huge amounts of money for the same results by going with an entry level hire. Legit reasons for needing experience - Complex sell with a tough buyer profile (CISO, CTO, CRO etc) - You don't have an outbound process or manager who can train. Non legit reasons - You're too lazy to train - You think hiring with experience improves your retention (it's the opposite) Analyse your SDR culture, could you be going with no experience?? #sdrjobs #sdrteam #salesjobs

I know a salesperson that went from making only $1,500 commission a month as an SMB/MM AE to making $15,000 a month in less than 6 months. He ended up hitting 225% quota and got promoted to an Enterprise AE. Here are 20 (of the 100+) things he did that got him there: 1. Set clear intentions and goals on every call (and got alignment). 2. Didn't try forcing all of his disco questions in the beginning (peppered them throughout the call) 3. Asked challenging questions at the right time (with confidence) 4. Asked open-ended questions throughout the call 5. Focused on understanding pain and impact before moving on 6. Understood the prospect's current business process. 7. Understood the prospect's critical event in detail. 8. Recapped what they've understood from discovery before moving on 9. Didn't give his opinion about why they like their product (it's biased) 10. Always got feedback from the prospect throughout the demo (via more discovery). 11. Spoke with conviction and confidence (all about tonality and delivery) 12. Really gave a sh** about solving the prospects' problems (mindset is everything). 13. Prepped his champion to sell better when he couldn't speak to DM. 14. Surgically looped in internal and external stakeholders at the right time. 15. Stopped selling when the prospect is sold (hard to do) 16. Got prospects to sell themselves through unselling himself. 17. Always kept prospecting, even if that meant he starts early or stays in late. 18. Got all stakeholders to agree on the problem and solution. 19. Set next steps that prospects will agree to - not only to "get something in the books" 20. Built trust VERY early on by showcasing how much he already knew about the prospect and their company (he connected the dots). This AE is a member of my sales coaching community and program. Before he gave up, he invested in himself. TAKEAWAY: It's not 1 skill that will get you to goal, it's many, compounded over time. Keep layering on new skills once you've improved on the other. Where have all the SDR/BDR jobs gone? I ran a search today for open SDR and BDR positions in the United States. The terms I searched were, "sales development representative," "business development representative," "SDR," and "BDR." The combined total jobs turned out to be 6,514. Seems to me that when I ran a similar search over the last four years, the results were much higher; like up to 20,000 open positions. I learned two things from this exercise: 1. You get way more results if you spell out sales development representative or business development representative than just SDR or BDR. 2. People who are currently in SDR or BDR roles need to start training for what's next in their careers. NOW. But to get promoted, you need to be at the top of leaderboard. I've made big mistakes in my sales career. Here's my top 5: I know it may seem like I'm crushing it. But my journey has been anything but a straight line: 𝗗𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲... 1. I missed quota. Thought hitting was a sure thing and took my foot off the gas. A couple "sure things" slipped at the last minute and I missed. 2. Joined a startup that imploded. We raised 500MM one month and then laid a bunch of people off 3 months later. It was absolutely wild and I was pretty embarrassed because I left a career in accounting for this company. 3. Getting feedback that I was "delusional" (they were right). I let success go to my head, didn't take the presentation seriously and barely prepared for it. Came in with a huge ego and got checked big time. 4. Getting feedback that I was terrible at building working relationships with peers (they were right again). Again, I let my ego get the best of me. Also, didn't help I was going through hard life stuff at the time. 5. Completely bombing a presentation in front of the entire C-Suite of my company (not going to lie that one hurt). This one will always stay with me for the rest of my days on this planet and the after life haha. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱: 1. Everything's going to be OK. Just give it some time and don't be too hard on yourself. Sales is not life and death. 2. Those moments matter a lot less than you think. People have short attention spans. Some new problem will be in the limelight next month. 3. How you move forward after a setback matters 100x more than anything else. Feel the emotion but then move on with a plan for how to improve. 4. Literally everyone makes mistakes in their careers. Doesn't matter how successful they are. Welcome to the club. 5. Listening, learning and growing from the experience is all that matters. One of my favorite things to do is reflect on the weekends on what changes I can make and how I can improve. There are 130K BDRs on LinkedIn. All are prospecting. Some are cold calling. A handful are skilled at it. Take that skill you're using for someone else and do it for yourself. Don't go all in, though. Lower your risk by getting your first client who pays you high four-figures per month. Once you get your second client you can now decide, with real world-data , to bet on yourself full time. All you need is a list and a dialing platform to build your own pipeline. Would you pay a £90,000 salary for an SDR? Most people's instant reaction is NO! A fair reaction. But what if that SDR was a career SDR, had double/triple the results of any "regular" SDR? Proven over 5 years, even through 2023. Would it make sense? Could companies justify that level of salary? Results wise it would make sense - instead of paying salaries for 2-3 SDRs, the time spent coaching and developing, the investment in tools, employee set up etc. You could just have one heavy hitter with the same productivity. No worries about them leaving to get an AE role, or putting pressure to progress. Would seem to solve a big headache - especially with how hard the SDR game is these days. I just think mentally most companies would struggle to get their head around paying that level of salary. I mention it as James Branton spoke with an SDR who had been offered £90,000 + £50,000 - £140,000 OTE - so there's definitely some companies happy to consider that but I would bet 99% would run a mile when they saw those salary expectations... Makes me think that we might see a rise of career-SDRs in 2024 - people who have mastered the artform and can be dependable month on month to deliver excellent results...

Pipeline coverage is the reason your team is missing quota Companies aren't looking for AE training ... They need pipeline before this becomes a priority They're trying to get AEs on the phone The inbound machine is overly competitive If you're not self-sourcing deals then you're leaving quota in someone else's hands So if you think to yourself "I'm just a BDR" Stop putting yourself down Companies are crying out for pipeline You should never stop being a BDR It means you don't rely on inbound or another BDR as an AE That should be a bonus
