How can you balance priorities with product road mapping?
Document one-page vision statements that address "why" from customer/value and strategic perspectives. From a customer lens, craft the problem/opportunity and what delivery on vision replaces (i.e. legacy products, processes, or tech). From a strategic question, answer "why now," as most organizations have too many top priorities, and the "now" should outline the urgency. I recommend that product and innovation teams craft one-page vision statements for each time horizon. A longer-term vision statement should help align stakeholders, but a shorter-term one should set realistic expectations and define priorities. I provide a vision statement template on the StarCIO website.

What is the best way to prioritize your technology's problem-solving capabilities?
Before investing time or working on any solutions, consider what value solving it brings to the business and to customers. Capture that value in a vision statement that defines the customer, value proposition, and how they work through or around the problem today. Then, consider the strategic importance and answer, why solve it, and equally important, why now? A vision statement can capture these and other details, such as - What are some options for customers to solution on their own, and where can you provide added value? - What constraints such as costs, regulations, or security bound potential solutions? Run the vision by stakeholders and ideally through an ideation process. Focus on the optimal problems worth solving.
