An excerpt: When news of George Floyd’s death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer hit, I felt an overwhelming range of emotions.

As Floyd’s funeral came through Houston, the city came together to lend their respect and call for a collective change. Seeing people of all races and backgrounds come out in support gave me a sense of pride in our community.
But it also made me sad, because we should not even be here. We shouldn’t be mourning the death of a Black man for an unjust reason. We’ve been in this situation far too many times.
We all have a role to play in making change. And while posting pictures of black boxes on Instagram and calling for change on social media are nice gestures, there’s still work to be done as a community. I saw many posts coming from white people declaring, “I’m listening.”
Well, we heard you, and now’s really the time to listen. Knowing we have a captive audience, we reached out to some of Houston’s top Black business and community leaders to hear what they had to say. I believe our role as a business journal is to foster communication with the hope that we can influence change. It’s a small gesture, but one I hope will spark constructive dialogue.
Yes, we help you build your business. But I implore you, what better way to foster business than to be inclusive? I hope you’ll listen.
