Industry news: Penguin Random House dismisses two of its top publishers. The 'Big 5' publishers have been caught up in a slew of layoffs over the last couple of years as the book industry recalibrates post-Covid/AI/social media. Some might take this as a bad thing, a kind of death knell for the industry. I find it encouraging. It's a good thing for big multinationals to be in a state of flux - it compels us to ask difficult questions about the sustainability of our businesses and how we can remain relevant in a world that looks very different from the 'gentleman's industry' of books in the 1900s (and even early 2000s).

When the bean counters are in charge, even the best and most talented employees are not safe. I am, of course, flashing back to my own layoff in 2018 after 27 years of excellent and loyal service. It was such a brutal and humiliating experience. How much $$ is PRH really saving by discharging these two publishers? The problem is that the market is saturated with too many books and too many of the same kinds of books. The old publishing model of seeing what sticks doesn't work anymore. A quick browse of the Strand Bookstore's discount carts will reveal a treasure of recent titles, already remaindered a month or two after their publication. #publishing #layoffs #penguinrandomhouse

Indie publishers: IBPA is accepting applications through June 16 for its Innovative Voices Program, designed for publishers from marginalized communities (including but not limited to race, gender, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, caste, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, language, disability, or age.) As a book editor, I pay close attention to my own interest level as soon as I crack open a fresh manuscript. I ask myself: Does it have a catchy opening, with engaging language that hooks my interest right away? Is the story world intriguing enough to beckon me to read further?
